not sure if serious ? full moon clips in a single action revolver ? remove the cylinder to reload ? hmmmm....i guess if you practice a lot, you could get fast at it.

if it's an older model Vaquero, you can shot some warm loads in the .45 Colt, but the newer models have been sized down a lot closer in size to the Colt SAA and it's not recommended for hot stuff. having both cylinders would be a good idea to me though....just in case.

Re: Ruger Vaquero in .45 ACP?

I know on the web site they are a dealer special but Im looking for a price on them, I dont think I would ever got with getting the cylinder bored out, I would much rather pay for the one from the manufacture, and know the R&D has been done. Im just trying to be a little more cost effective with the purchase, I know 38 thru the 357 is going to to be cheaper then the 45 acp but I already reload 45 so its going to be cheaper in the long run.

Re: Ruger Vaquero in .45 ACP?

I had a ruger vaquero I bought brand new, in 06. I shot some STIFF loads out of it, we are talking close to 44mag if not more. Held together fine. Damned thing wouldnt hit a barn at 25yards though.

Re: Ruger Vaquero in .45 ACP?

I don't have a Vaquero but I have a Bisley Balckhawk with interchangeable cylinders. Accuracy with the .45 ACP cylinder was actually very good with my revolver, and the .45 Col heavy loads are nothing to scoff at, either. I know the new Vaqueros are a lighter build, but I think they are still very high quality. Go for it.

Re: Ruger Vaquero in .45 ACP?

Since you already load 45 Colt, just buy the Colt and load it mild. I've loaded some 165gr semiwadcutters that you could see going down range. Zero recoil. Totally fun and even cheaper than 45acp.

Re: Ruger Vaquero in .45 ACP?

If you can find an old model Vaquero (or even better, a Bisley Vaquero) with the interchangeable cylinders, you can shoot anything from mousefart 45ACP loads featuring 165 grain bullets at 500 fps to 45 Colts with 320 grain slugs at 1300 fps. 45 ACP +P and 45 Super is no problem in those original Vaqs either, if you want to stick with the ACP cylinder only.

The New Model Vaquero is indeed a smaller-framed firearm and not built to handle the +P 45 Colt loads, but +P 45ACP should be fine...they are still very mild pressure.

One thing to consider is that those revolvers have a .452"-.453" bore. Most 45ACP projectiles are .451". You will generally find best accuracy with cast bullets which are soft enough to obturate (bump up) to fill the bore. This also helps keep leading to a minimum, as the flame cutting on the sides of the bullets are virtually eliminated. I have loaded quite a few 45 Colt bullets in 45ACP cases for the Blackhawk and Vaquero convertibles. As long as you don't use a Lee Carbide Factory Crimp Die (which will swage down the bullet after it has been seated) you will end up with some very accurate ammo. I have seen more than a few one inch 25-yard groups with Hodgdon Clays under a 255 grain 45 Colt bullet in ACP cases. Super clean and economical to boot.

My wife and I own nearly a dozen Ruger single action revolvers and use them heavily in competition. Trust me when I say there are very few firearms which will perform as consistently under as wide a range of conditions without requiring more than a cursory cleaning once in a while. Dependable, durable, reliable, and accurate...buy with confidence.

Re: Ruger Vaquero in .45 ACP?

I'm not going to get into the load levels of a Ruger SA, to much info already out there you can look up. I will say they are great guns.

Now for a 45 acp Single Action speed loader...........a 1911 mag, works great.
With practice and correct hand placement you can unload and reload in 5-6 seconds. I think there is a couple videos on youtube.
