I wonder how many Russian flags are being bought by the ships running through there now????

    RUSSIAN NAVY CAPTURES SOMALI PIRATES

How about that - The Russians captured the Pirates, tied them up, put them on their boats, then set them all on fire - puff no more Pirates!

    NO POLITICAL CORRECTNESS BS HERE!

This video shows Russian Navy commandos on a Somalian pirate ship shortly after the pirates had captured a Russian oil tanker. The Euro Union navy that patrols these waters would not interfere because they feared there could be casualties.

All explanations are in Russian with a single exception of when a wounded pirate says something in English and the Russian soldier says "This is not a fishing boat". All conversations between the commandos are in Russian. If you don't understand Russian, the pictures speak for themselves.

The soldiers freed their compatriots and the tanker. The Russian Navy Commandos moved the pirates back to their own (pirate) ship, searched the pirate ship for weapons and explosives and then they left the ship and exploded it with all remaining pirates hand-cuffed to it.

The commandos sank the pirate ship along with the pirates and without any court proceedings, lawyers etc. That is, they used the anti-piracy laws of the 18th and 19th centuries where the captain of the rescuing ship has the right to decide what to do with the pirates. Usually, they were hung.

I would think from now on, Russian ships will not be targets for Somali pirates.

We used to be hard core about pirates, any one recall The Barbary Wars? That is where the Marines got their ye olde "Shores of Tripoli" from.

We had better leadership back then....good for the Russians though, that is the best way to handle the problem.

They should have done it the Israeli way, just cut a small hole in the bottom of the boat . . . slowly but surely . . . "You like boats??? You like water??? You think you're a badassed pirate????"

But only one pirate died in the conflict.

Re: Russians Do Not Tolerate Somali Piraes

    why should they tolerate them?
    why should anyone tolerate them?
the Russians dont take shit from anybody.
and we just bought a new soccer field at gitmo for the guy who cut off Daniel Pearl's head! jus sayin...

I hated the Somali's when I was there, so seeing something bad happen to them basically gets me off.

With any luck they'll be starving to death soon.

I'd sure like video of those pirates drowning for proof of kill, but I suspect they were, minus the leg-shot guy, captured and held in stir.

If we could get away with it...Unfortunately, most ROE is not driven by the military. Couple that with the fact that this will continue no matter how many are killed for the following reasons:

    1. The actual pirates that are conducting the attacks are generally unwilling participants.
    2. They are coerced into piracy because their families will other wise be killed.
    3. The guys running the racket are making big money ashore from the ransoms.
    4. The issue lies with the gangs that are out kidnapping peoples' family members and telling them to be a pirate or die alongside their loved ones.
    5. There are massive international crime rings that are sending money down to these war lords and expecting return on investment.

Having done counter-piracy off of Somalia, I can tell you the situation is complicated. Again, I, nor anyone of us onboard the ship made any of the rules we had to follow. If we really wanted to end the pirate threat we would focus on land, not at sea.
