Rifle Scopes S&B New Ilumination knob and Hunting 1-8x

Just wanted to pass on some info I just got from S&B. S&B will be coming out with a new illumination knob on the 3-20x. It will come with a new integrated parallax/illumination knob. The 5-25x56 PMII will also have this feature in the future.

That will make some who don't like the current position happy including the lefties.

They will also have a hunting version of the 1-8x, it just wont have the tactical bdc turrets and will be sold at a lower price.

Good things coming from S&B.

I've owned a few leupies, and a few USO's. Right now I can't think of one I want more now. I will definitely be getting the 3-20 AND the 1-8 S&B!!!!!!!!!!!!!Heeheeeheheheheheheheheeeeee.

how are they doing 7x the first power? I thought 5x the first power was pushing the limits?

ie 3-12 = 4

4-16 = 4

5-25 = 5

The 1-8 has had some changes since the SHOT show model so I'll try to find out for you about the objective.

I wonder how low on the magnification you can dial before the field of view stays constant and does not increase.


On my 5-25 I think it is at 7 power down to 5 where you start to see the black ring around the image. On the 3-12 it is about 3.7 or so when this happens. I suspect this may be more pronounced on the 3-20 and it will be interesting to see.

Yup me too!

I see that SWFA.com has a listing for the Premier 1-8. That looks promising also.

Don't the Premier Reticles Heritage's come with the integrated illum/parallax knob also?

Either way, 3-20, 1-8...damn, I should start saving my quarters. haha

Cool. I just wish the good scopes didnt weigh so much. I would love to have a 4-16 on my hunting rifle, but dont want an extra pound..

300, the 1-8 is a 24mm objective and the 3-20 is a 50. Also retail on the 1-8x should be about the same as the other Short Dots at around $2550.

Hopefully next week I will get some pics of the new integrated illumination/parallax knob to show everyone.

300, what's wrong with the P4/P4F? I really like that reticle. I have a Gen II in one of my 5-25 and like that too.

The new combo knob will be on the 3-20 and should also be offered on other scopes in the future.

I don't see a thing wrong with that 3-20 myself. I think they've really made some killer improvements and the P4f reticle is good for me. I'd like to try one out, if they're not mucho dinero.

Probably right in the same neighborhood as the other S&Bs. The 1-8x is about the same as the other Short Dots.

actually now that I think about it. The 3-20 isn't that impressive. I mean USO has nice wide FOV and goes 3.8-22 hence the 3-20 idea has already been accomplished.

More than power range going on. The S&B is 15" long vs the 18" on the USO as well as coming with a side parallax adjustment vs only the ergo in the 3.8-22 so no having to reach all the way up there to adjust. Also 14 mils per turn knobs with 36 mils of internal adjustment. Not to mention the S&B glass. The S&B is also about a half pound lighter.

The power range might have been done but you need to look at the whole picture.

According to the spec sheet that was handed out at IWA, it weighs 1100g which is 20g <span style="font-style: italic">more</span> than the 5-25x56. This is more in line with the look and feel of the scope than the data published online previously.

When it comes to magnification range, I believe there are already 10x factor being produced by chinese manufacturers, but this doesnt tell us much about optical quality and "true" 10x range - just have a look at S&B 5-25x56, which really is a ~7,5-25x in reality.

Swarowski has a true 6x range, and I am really excited to see if the new S&B's really are "true" 8x magnification range scopes, and if optical quality is sustained throughout the magnification range..

If the FOV measurements listed are accurate, this scope should <span style="font-weight: bold">not</span> suffer the tunneling effect on the low end that the 3-12 and 5-25 do. That will be nice.

If this is correct:

then it is not a 3-20X...

50mm / 20X = 2.5 mm ...OK, max magnification is really 20X

50mm / 11.4mm = 4.39X ...minimum magnification possible with this exit pupil

What you can do with published exit pupil and magnification data is calculate effective entrance pupil.

Yes, David <span style="font-style: italic">it may be smaller (usually is) but not larger...</span>

That's why I said the magnification with an objective of 50 mm and an exit pupil of 11.4 must be at least 4.39X

That is: <span style="font-style: italic">Magnification times exit pupil equals effective entrance pupil</span>, which ist smaller than physical objective diameter in this case. I don't see a contradiction here. Your unknown variable in this equation is effective entrance pupil. If the resulting value for effective entrance pupil turned out to be larger than physical objective diameter, then there would be a problem, but not this way around.

50mm / 3x = 16.67 mm exit pupil --> this is the largest exit pupil a scope with a 50 mm objective could have

as usual, at the low end efective entrance is smaller than frontal objective diameter, thus exit pupil is smaller (11.4 mm).
