Rifle Scopes S&B or Premier 5-25X56

I have handled both the S&B PMII 5-25X56 and Premier Heritage 5-25X56 and both seemed to have excellent glass. I am currently looking for a scope to go on my .338 Lapua.

Which would you purchase and why? Does one offer a distinct advantage over the other?

Yes there is some tunneling below about 7.5x in the S&B but the power still goes down to 5x.

I have been using an S&B 5-25x56 for years and love the scope. I personally like the knobs better and reticle choices better on the S&B than the Premier, which I have also owned 2 of and used, but those are personal choices. You have done better than most having hands on both so make the decision on which you liked better and run with it.

My preference is Premier. I have one on my 338 and the scope is amazing. The turret design is good and I absolutely love the Gen 2 XR reticle.

Rob i have seen this tunnel effect that people keep speaking of and i decided to test a 4-16x50 S&B vs a 2.5-16x50 Bushnell.

The Bushnell has NO tunnel effect at any power and i couldnt get my head around this.... until i noticed that the image coming through the scope was actually smaller in the bushnell to start with. which means that the S&B had the same FOV at the same magnification even with the tunnel effect of the S&B.

You would need to put both scopes on a tripod side by side to see if the Premier actually had any kind of advantage over the S&B. I have found in my testing that scopes without tunnel effect clip the edge of the image off as the magnification goes up so you cant use the standard FOV figures as proof.

Edit. Upon further testing i have noted that at both scopes at 4x magnification the FOV is almost the same yet both scopes at 8X magnification the S&B has a MUCH larger FOV.

There must be optical limits you can achieve with all scopes, the point im making is that if one scope doesnt tunnel its got to lose something somewhere else.

Long and the short is id buy which one is the cheapest since they are both top end scopes

I would lean towards the Premier because I like the Gen 2XR so much, but reticles are completely personal preference. Get which one you feel best behind. By the way, I also really don't like the tunneling on the 5-25 S&B, but If you're like me you won't ever have it below about 15x with the 338.

It really boils down to personal preference.

I could not find the S&B that I wanted a while ago, so I thought I would run a Premier while I waited. Over a year later, I am still running the PH and have little desire to switch. It does everything I want in a scope and does it well.

Honestly, the ONLY adavantage I see over the S&B is the toolless adjustment. The S&B holds a very slight advantage in low light...and I mean VERY low light...almost totally dark. But, my reticle is usable longer without the illum. Pretty much a wash.

The rest of my team happily runs S&Bs.

They are both great scopes...the best available in my opinion. Pick the one that is available at the best price...can't go wrong with either. I guess I did not help much, huh?

I went with the premier for my 338. As others have already stated it is all personal preference as they are both great scopes. I really like the gen II xr reticle, you may not. If you have the chance to do a side by side comparison do so. Otherwise go with what you like the most. I wouldn't get to hung up on the S&B tunneling. You likely will not be using that mag range very often anyway. Best of luck on your purchase.

Good info Millspec. I have used down to 5x on rare occasions at very close targets, down to 11 feet, and never had any trroubles with the way the S&B works.

Just wanted to mention for anyone wondering, the new 3-20x S&B has no tunneling down to 3x. I know some have been wondering.

I have both scopes, and have the S&B on my 338. I prefer the S&B P4F reticle over the Premier XR ...just personnal preference. Both scopes are great, but I haven't had a chance to shoot the rifle, or even do a bore sight on the rifle that the Premier is mounted on. You can't go wrong either way, both have a fantastic warranty with top notch customer service.

Are you limiting your choices to just those two? Reason I ask is I have looked through those two on more than a few occasions and they are very nice. All things being equal I tend to go for US made, but the P4F is an outstanding reticle, so its a tough choice. I owned a PH 5-25 Gen2XR for about an hour. The reticle got too small 'for me' below 10X, and the half Mil hashes are more distinct than the full Mil dots. I knew this reticle was not for me, so I sold that scope the same day it came in. Other people love this reticle however, so if you like it, then its worth serious consideration.

After seeing them all again at SHOT, I ended up ordering a USO 5-25 GAP MIL/MIL FFP 34mm tube, 58mm obj, with the new illumination button and bubble level inside the tube. USO is making me an EREK knob with 'large font' marks on the turret, another plus with dealing with a smaller USA company, that is used to doing custom work. That would be a great candidate for 338. Once again, just personal preference. At that level of quality, any of them should serve you well.

If you get the S&B and are used to CCW turrets, make sure you get one with CCW turrets, unless you want to convert to CW.

Good luck with your choice, you have some excellent options from which to choose.

What Mark said. I prefer my 3.8-22 with the ERGO slightly over my 5-25 T-Pal, and I also prefer the MPR over the GAP.


Of the two scopes tteh OP specifically asked about, I prefer the S&B, but I like the GenIIXR better than the P4F, so I'd be looking for a hen's tooth.

Hmmm.... you're right. But given the fact that Ilya is an expert on all thinks optical and given the fact that he reviews the Premier Heritage 3-15X50 and the S&B PMII 4-16X50, one might be able to use their imagination. It is a good read either way and at least indicates the types of things an expert looks for optically in the scopes. I think it is worth a read before spending over $2,500 on a new optic.

The review was very good. but from a technical standpoint the comparisons were not there. the amount of scopes in the review meant that he fell short of going in to details as it would of required so much work.

What is really needed is a kind of face of between direct rivals such as the Premier and S&B 5-25

Carter, I have used the scopes in question more than just an afternoon looking through them at the range so I would like to think I have some expierience as well but wouldn't call myself an expert.

Also the 4-16 S&B has different features than what he is looking at so not going to help him. The 5-25 has a dual turn mil elevation knob and also parrallax adjusts down to 10 meters. Also has a 56mm objective to name a few. Best to compare apples to apples if spending your money.

The poster said he has handled and looked through both so now it basically comes down to which reticles and knobs he likes.

I vote s&b, i have owned both and compared them side by side. honestly i like the knobs alittle better on the schmidt over the premier. I know this is crazy but i have more confidence in the s&b based on how long they have been around and how precise there knobs felt. glass is great on both and both reticles are nice so go with your gut instinct otherwise you will always wonder if you made the wrong choice.

I have owned both and compared both side by side several times. The PR has a more "rugged" feel, like you could drive nails with it, but the S&B seems more "refined".

Several things that really sold me on the S&B were these:

1. A fast focus eyepiece...I am nearsighted in one eye and far in the other, I can just give the S&B a half turn and I am ready for support side shooting, the PR just has to stay blurry.

2. The distance marked parallax adjustment..... at many comps, you have to sit your rifle down and then move back to run to your rifle to shoot the stage. I can just set the parallax to XXX and I am ready to shoot, no fiddling with the adjustment when I get there. Sounds nuts, but it is even useful for a crude rangefinder, focus it and then look at the yardage marked, it will be VERY close.

3. Close focus on the parallax, I don't need to run an aux. red dot for 5-40 yard shots, it will focus down very close, unlike most other scopes. I can hit an aspirin tablet at 7 yards with no problem, you can't do it with a PR.

To many (probably most) shooters these 3 things would make no difference, but they do to me.

I was able to look at both in depth at SHOT Show, that being said I came home with a 1.5-8 USO and (ordered) a 5x25 Premier. I just didn't like the tunnel effect on the S&B. It was crystal clear, but not in stock either. Premier's are instock and ready to ship

I never have understood peoples issues with a scope tunneling. One rarely, if ever, dials down that far. Movers can easily be shot at 10x or more.

As to the original question. Both are very nice scopes. I prefer my schmidts to my premier. I think the clicks are crisper on the S&B, the paralax adjustment is better and I also prefer the fourth knob for the lighting the reticle. As always this is just my opinion based on my experience.

Sure. I just wouldn't discourage anyone from reading the article because I think it gives a great recap of the high end scopes available.

Ilya knows how to test the scopes very well from an optical standpoint. Not to belittle your experience. Users such as yourself, Lowlight, etc. provide excellent practical feedback around usability. I think that someone should investigate all the angles before buying.

BTW- something that hasn't been mentioned above is the parallax focuses down to 10m on the S&B. As someone who just bought an IOTA so that I can practice dry fire indoors, that is a very appealing feature. Probably not a deal breaker, but clearly nice to have.

Rob... you used to be a big Nightforce guy, didn't you? What caused you to convert? (Not to derail the thread)

Agreed Carter but the problem is people get really hung up on the numbers and such in all the lab testing and honestly when you get to that level scope they really don't mean much as they are very close. It comes down more to personal feel and likes and dislikes of the scope the end user wants. The OP has more experience than most that make these decisions as he has handled both and looked through them and felt the knobs. Now it's just his decision.

We shot Nightforce as a Team for 2009 and I still think the F1 is a good scope and they fixed the one problem, in my opinion, in the reticle with their new designs. The original MLR was a good reticle but the newer version gives more room for holds. But for years before that I used my S&B 5-25 and after getting picked up in 2010 by S&B as a sponsored Team I had no problem going back to it. I love the scope and it's power range. I really think the S&B 5-25 is the perfect scope. If I had my choice of any scope to use it would be the S&B 5-25 with mil knobs and P4F reticle. That may change after I get my 3-20x in April though but we will have to wait and see

There is a lot more to a scope than "looks' as everyone sees things different and without a machine, the view through a scope is nothing more than a subjective opinion, informed or not, it's just an opinion.

Ilya is a great guy, he can tell you I was there at Premier when he was, so he can tell how i am when around the builder.

Personally I think how a scope "looks' is not even a secondary consideration, but one below that, especially when you are spending $2k + and believe me, issue can arise any where from anyone... the question is how it is addressed. I have yet to miss a target because it had more "blue" in it than say a Nightforce for example... contrast is nice, but still, there are more important things to consider.

3-20X is very nice. In FFP, I worry a bit about what ranges the reticle really works for.

I can see peoples' complaint about the reticle size on the PH. It is less usable at 5X (not an issue for me, I have great near vision), but it is great at 25X. That was my concern about the March. I would like to see that in action.

Truly, 80%-90% of the time, every scope I have lives at max magnification, but when I do back off, I generally have to back most if not all the way down. But then, I am not using my scopes in tactical comps, so I am not really like most on this forum.

When I recently contemplated purchasing each of the 2 scopes in question almost everything was a wash. To me the glass was the same, I liked the S&B turrets slightly more, and I liked the Gen 2XR reticle slightly more than the P4F. So if all else is equal, why wouldn't you go for the Premier with it's substantially larger FOV on the low mags and slight edge on the higher mags.

I will give you a perfect example of "Looks" versus "function" -- Take IOR scopes, like the 3-18X FFP Model.

Admittedly, IOR scopes "look" better than most scopes, in their class and even at times out of their class... however there is a reason we now have a GEN 4 version of that scope. Because "looks" are everything, or in this case, anything. Which is why you saw a GEN 1, GEN 2, GEN3, and now GEN 4.

This should be a lesson for everyone who considers "looks" first.

Absolutely, but when you are talking about these scopes that are very, very similar, you are looking at anything to differentiate them. As was mentioned above, their DNA is basically the same. You really are getting down to the third or fourth consideration there. Ahead of that, I guess is whether someone likes the reticle or MTC. And even MTC, you can get it on the S&B, but if you hate it, the Premier is a no go.

I'm in the same boat as the poster or at least I'm stepping in that direction. I have an AE MK II .308 I know the scope will cost the same as the rifle, but I really want the best glass. Right now I have an NF 5.5-22 x 50 NP-R1. Think I'm crazy and should just stick with what I got? I apologize to the poster if I'm stepping on toes, but I'm looking at both the S&B and Premier in the same mag.

I switched to PH from a NXS 5.5x22x56. I was looking @ S&B and PH. I liked the features on the PH a little better than the S&B. To me the glass was equal, at least to my eyes. As Lowlight mentioned it is just an opinion of the individual that looks through the eyepiece.

I like the Gen 2 XR and the MTC... No regrets on the switch from the NXS.

Either scope would be a win.

Shooting at twilight

Shooting several targets in quick succession

Glassing while hunting or in a tactical situation for that matter

Spotting for more than one shooter

Hunting large game at close distance

These all matter to me, so I answered the question honestly. I won't buy the premier, as I like s&b more, so I'm waiting for the 3-20.

If u don't have the same needs as me that's fine, no need for an argument to ensue.

Each suits their respective brief, so close on features, not brand.

Thanks for all the comments. I like the turrets of the PH and the Gen 2 XR reticle, if it had the close parallax adjustment of the S&B I would be completely sold on the PH. I'm leaning towards the PH due to the reticle, turrets and price.

I like my PR 5-25, its not perfect, but I still like it, and it cost 1000 dollars less than a 5-25 S&B at the time I bought it.

They never cost $1000 less than a S&B new. They came out at like $2499 and have gone up. I bought one of the first ones when they came out.

Premier 5-25s are about $2970 now and S&Bs run about $3100. If you shop around they can be had for less. A recent group buy was selling them around $2850. If you are LE/Mil I can get you them for less.

1k less than a 5-25 S&B with Gen2XR, CKA and me both got the same price, and BO USMC rings included, delivered to my house was less than 5k for both.

If your gonna spend 2800, youll spend 3100 pretty easily if you like it better.

Personally, I dont think the price difference is much of a qualm, the schmidt comes a long way, the premier doesnt, so the $300ish isnt bad.

In NZ, where they both come about the same distance, the schmidt is actually cheaper, but I'd consider the premier, it just doesnt match my needs (im not after a 5-25, more 4-16 or 3-20)

I'm sure that SB's cs is great, but I know that PR's is close to perfect. Hopefully you won't have to deal w a companies cs dept. I just bought my 3rd PR because of the service that I have received and bc they are built here. I would rather support a small US based business than a large global or German one.

Call PR and talk to Paul. If you do, I bet you buy one.

Practice does make perfect. And in some cases "close to perfect".

Not needing customer service is far more important to some than others. Regardless how good the warranty or cs is, neither one can be used in the field.

I have spoken with Paul and was very impressed with him and their scopes.

As to the comment on practice makes perfect on the CS issue. I don't recall hearing of PH Tactical scopes going back to Premier due to factory defects. I'm sure it's happened, but I don't think that is why their CS is great. It is probably due to the fact that they have dealt directly with end users for a number of years for custom reticle work. In my opinion, you won't be in business long if you directly service your end user and have crappy customer service.
