Rifle Scopes S&B P4 fine reticle question

Re: S&B P4 fine reticle question

I have two of them (5-25 P4F) and one of them does have a larger subtension on the middle crosshair. I contacted S&B about it on Friday and they asked me to send it in when I have time. So I will see what they say.

Several years ago there were some PMII with defective P4F reticles in circulation. I don't remember where I saw it posted (it may have been here on the Hide' somewhere else, or both), but some through-the-scope photos showing the reticle were posted. The affected scope definitely had a much thicker crosshair than is normal in a P4F reticle.

You are not crazy, no optical illusion. There are some out there. The scope function is fine but subtension is off. Call S&B they will fix it.

That is what I heard too. The folks in Germany say the subtension is within spec. However, I understand that S&B in the US knows better and are replacing the reticles of the ones with thicker center crosshair subtenstions.

I have one of these scopes on order but also like the Premier too. I do like the Premier's reticle better and may just get one of them instead. I'm not a big fan of buying expensive item and immedidately having to send it in for a tune up.

So you haven't even gotten the scope yet? You might want to get it in before you assume you will have a problem with it. My P4Fs don't have anything wrong with the center as it's the same dimensions as the rest of the reticle and I know many more that have no problems either.

If you are going to start not getting scopes because of the minute chance there will be a problem you better stick to irons

Do not have it yet. And yes you are correct. I'm kind of straining at a gnat on this. The reason is I really like the reticle of the Premier a little better, the Gen 2 XR. So I'm on the fence as to which to buy. On the S&B I am not certain of the spacing from the crosshairs to the first hash marks and I've not been able to find it on the drawing of the reticle I have.

Re: S&B P4 fine reticle question

It's 1 mil from the crosshair to the first large hashmark. The break is at about .8 mils. Every small hashmark after that is .5 mil and the larger ones are a full mil. On the vertical under the crosshairs there is also a larger mark at every 5 mils for a fast reference point for holds. I have used the reticle to hold from a 100 yard zero to 1000 yards very easily.

Also out at the horizonatal edges and the top of the reticle they have .2 mil marks which are excellent for breaking down the reticle for ranging.

Get what you want but the P4F is one of the best reticles I have ever used in a tactical scope. I would give it and the rest of the scope a try. I have also owned a Gen IIXR in a Premier 5-25 as well so I have used both.

Well you can have the best of both worlds on this one.
S&B PMII 5-25x56 - GenII XR Anyone?

Listen to Rob, I didn't quite understand the fact you didn't even have it. To my understanding the issue I speak of is in an older batch of scopes.

As to the p4f vs gen2xr. Both are great, IMO the gen2xr makes me think of a user that's specialized or advanced in respect to reticle usage. Not that someone couldn't utilize it as their first 'high end' reticle. After trying several...I wouldn't recommend it as a starting point.

I am however an advocate of if you really think you gotta have it, you better get it and try it!
