Sad news from McMillan today on my Steyr...

Bad news from McMillan today. Wanted to order a McMillan SBS stock with adjustable cheek piece for my Steyr Pro Hunter stainless 7mm remington magnum. Here is a summary of the phone call experience....

The phone receptionist was professional, giving her name upon answering the phone, which is a rare thing these days and shows some kind of professional training.

However, after explaining what I'd like to order, she transferred me to a girl (I would use "woman" but I'm not sure she was old enough to drive), who was proporting to be the correct person to answer my call and questions on the Steyr Pro Hunter stock. I asked if there was a difference between a long action stock and short action stock for the Steyr Pro Hunter SBS, to which she replied no. She stated that they had them on the shelf at a discounted price, which made me excited to order right away. So I asked about the fore end sling mount so I could mount my brand new Atlas V8 with quick-detatch lever head to a picatinny rail (perfect bipod! Kasey at Accu-Shot, Thanks!). She stated that the SBS stocks come only with the rail in the fore end and an uncle mikes attachment system, with which I am not familiar. However, I did have an idea that these stocks come in whatever front sling attachment system you'd prefer. So now I'm becoming irritated. The first indication that she didn't know what she was talking about was the fact that she was chewing what sounded like potato chips in my ear and seemed annoyed about something. An unprofessional person at the least, and she's the one claiming to know what she's talking about. So after my few questions on the fore end and my Atlas bipod she asked me to hold with no explanation as to why. Then a gentleman answered the phone who knew what he was talking about. Why did I not get someone like him to begin with?

He sadly explained to me that the long action Steyr Pro Hunters will not fit their current production SBS stocks!

The current SBS stock is only for the .308 short action SBS Steyr rifles. Tooling for a long action Steyr Pro Hunter, he went on to explain, would take two tool adjustments/pieces of new equipment. One to mold the stock and one to hold the stock in the machine. At a cost of $5000.00 and the few calls they get, their break even point would be 30 years from now. I'm still sniffling from my sadness. Ahhhhhhh!

But this guy was professional, courteous and efficient, everything we all expect from the good name of McMillan. The second cousin high school dropout who was chewing potato chips on the phone was an anomaly and he assured me she would be "educated" on the stock options and not to eat chips while on the phone. Grrrr.

So my Pro Hunter 7mm rem mag will stay in Steyr attire for now. It is my hunting rifle and I think I'm ok with it for that purpose. I plan on building an SSG 69 PII .308 with suppressor later and will get the stock for that rifle setup. If anyone is selling theirs, I'm interested. Looking for the longer heavy target barrel and if it's threaded that's a plus.

Thanks guys...

That's odd - every person I've met from McMillan have been very professional and spoke very well. I've met quite a few at the local Cabelas.

Either way, that experience is unacceptable, but I'm glad you got ahold of somebody a little more professional. (I saw "mr. dixon" and was like wtf, hence why I entered thread lol)

McMillan is a very good company and it saddens me that this little girl put a smudge on their good name for you.
