I have a 243 sako forester thats shot out,its groups are like 2.5 ect.stony point measured to rifleing, bullet almost falling out.Anyyways if i set this barrel back a few thousands and re ream it to 243 ya think the rifleings are ok?or should i just rebarrel it.150 bucks vs. 5 or 6 hundred for a new barrel.

naw,im sure the gun smith will do that.my dad in the early 70s along with my brother shot alotof prairer dogs with it,im sure its shot out.the sako pad that says sako on it is worn pretty good, blueig on barrel is a little worn where it rode in a pickup rack.dad says it hasnt had 500 rounds through it lol.ya,right.all 100 yard shot groups, regardless what weight bullet is the same.shooting at a 1 inch dot it hits 9 oclock second shot 3 oclock third 4 inches low at 6 then 4th comes up closer to 6 o clock.rifle is a sako delux 243 23 inch barrel made in 69

Oh, sorry. I misunderstood. I thought you were asking a question.

If you know it's shot out then you know you need a new barrel...

reall i dont know if its shot out.look at the post i typed about those bullet groups, this rifle was shot off a lead sled.wouldnt you think it was shot out?2 and a half to 3 inch groups with any bullet.what i was asking if i reset the barrel back ya think the rifleings are still good?the smith said he'd set it back and re chamber to 243.

I said you are going to need to borescope it to be sure. Send it to the smith and have him scope it. If it doesn't have enough shank left to set it back in relation to the lands you need a new barrel. Would it seem like it is past its useful life? Yes. Can any of us know for sure...No. Get it scoped.

im sure theres enough shank.the guns never been messed with since he bought it brand new off the shelf in 69.what they gonna take off?a few thousands?couple threads?the re ream it to 243 again.the 23 inch barrel will be around 22 and 7/8 or so.I just wondered if the throat area was shot out if the rest of the rifleings in the barrel were good.he kept it clean.just wondering,if not id re barrel it.

There is no way to know without the smith looking at it. You will not get a definitive answer here.

Re: sako 1969 forester delux 243

We bought a forester in 308 back in the early seventies second hand. The rifle belonged to a PH in South Africa. That rifle had never ever shot well, we put an early weaver on it which showed how awfull it was. I have since rebarrelled it with a Lothar Walther, great rifle now.
If I would pick one up again, I wouldn't even test fire it, change barrel right away, even if it were new. Actions are one of the nicest out there.
