Sako TRG22 Pre-2013 Poor Extraction/Ejection

Ok,

To put it simply:

I have a pre- 2013 TRG-22 that I had PVA put a Bartlein Heavy Palma on that is a tack driver. No exaggeration, the rifle can put bullets in the same hole as long as the operator does his job.

The issue:

The rifle has poor extraction / ejection when running the bolt. Especially, if you don't run the bolt like you mean it.

Question: Has anyone resolved this issue? (aftermarket spring kit, cutting coils from the extractor spring, sacrificing virgins with foot fetches @Enough Said .... anything.)

I've seen one thread on the hide ,that I can't refind, indicating, I think, that due to the change in cartridge from 308 Win to 65 CM you need to cut a few loops from the extractor spring.

HELP, this shit was pissing me off royally this past week with @Enough Said and @lowlight. (I shot well enough, but it could have been better without that issue.)

In what way does it miss the eject? Not forceful enough ejection? Case stays in action?

Remove ejection pin and check spring.

Either dirt or broken spring (or both) are my initial though.

I replaced the springs and none of them are broken.

And the extractor is sharp?
Will it hold a shell firmly if you remove the bolt?

How much protrution on the ejector pin?

Sorry, can't help you with the spring shortening. Never heard about it.

Usually when a case fail to extract it's weak springs, dirt or debris...?

Absolutely if I pull the boat out slowly a cartridge falls into the action… If I pull it out rapidly, it falls outside the rifle like it’s supposed to…

Hard to tell but the extractor looks kind of rounded and worn? Like when it doesnt have much bite into the case rim and it can just roll off.

By hand, can you slide a case under it, rock it back to depress the ejector (or remove it if you are feeling motivated today) and pull forward to put tension on the case rim with the extractor and not have it slip out from under the extractor? If its wornand rolled over I can see how speed is the only thing that keeps the case moving backwards before falling out.

My new/year old TRG does this as well. Anything other than purposeful manipulation of the bolt will extract the casing from the chamber and begins to lift it out of the action, but it gets caught up or loses tension and falls back in. I don’t believe it’s a wear issue.

The ejector is brand new, with both the button and the spring having been replaced. (As have all the springs...)

That doesn't look like a brand new extractor to me, but your camera might be what causes it?

They are certainly different extractors. Humph. You keep yours cleaner than I do. (I actually haven't cleaned it since the last shoot.)

No, not stainless (nor spotless). The M995 is a Sporter and came with a polished bolt from the factory.

But your bolt faces seem a bit too grimy?

I was thinking the smaller neck of the CM was the culprit letting the case angle a bit more than a 308 case would, but the 22 was sold in 260 Rem so.

Try to clean your bolt face on the 22 and make sure all dirt is gone (it looks a bit concave too, but again your camera). Especially around the edge. With enough build up the extractor won't get a firm grip and might slip...

I went in the parts bin and took a look to see if I had a parts kit for the bolt…

Broke a two screw drivers trying to get that bastard of a extractor out…

Decided that, as far as I’m concerned, Putin can have Finland, or at least nuke the shit out of it.

….And eventually got everything put back together:

Basically, now if I pull the bolt back in any sort of a slow manner, it’s stove pipes. (which is much better than leaving the cartridge in the actual action.)

And it absolutely ejects with medium force and serious force every time you cycle it…

Even though I had previously replaced the ejector spring, the new one is significantly harder to push in… And the new extractor has sharper edges. (I’m positive I replaced it before, so I’m confused as to why it wore so quickly with only a few hundred rounds.)

One of the interesting thing with the kit is that it comes with two ejectors...

That’s cuz the new TRG42 has twin ejectors. I think what’s causing the poor ejection is the small ejection port. The case drags on it and loses its momentum. If you pull the bolt back too slow the ejection port will suck the case back in, lol.

Just saying with the spare we could dick around with my ejector sometime and see if it’s any different, however the extractor geometry looks the same as your new one.

Two ejectors are for the 338LM.

How many springs comes wit the kit Maybe you took a wrong one last time?

Crazy question, but have you checked to see if it does this either on the last round (no rounds in the magazine) or with the magazine out? Also check it with in out of the chassis or in the Sako chassis, in case the chassis is somehow flexing the action causing an alignment issue by bending the action (I see it is in a different Chassis) I am thinking that the case could have excess drag from below.

Another question, did this occur with the original barrel? I have owned 5 or 6 TRG 22 and worn out several barrels (a few being 308) and never had one single feeding or extraction / ejection issue. There were several custom barrels in the mix. I will admit that none of them ever ejected the case very far, which I honestly like.

Last thought, is there something with the chamber causing extra drag on the case?…

@jbell It didn’t do this as badly with the 308 barrel, so I suspect there is a difference with 6CM. The chassis is a vision and it’s tolerances are insane, but anything is possible. I did not check it with a full mag, verses last round, etc. In fact, I was using a single round loaded block for testing with once fired brass. (Didn’t want to take any chances with a loaded firearm in the basement…)

Though I had hoped it was something like that. Yeah, slow pulls now result in stove pipes… which is desirable compared to staying in the action.

Size yes. Spring tension?

Two springs can have same external but different "internal" dimensions. Wire gauge and number of coils are easy to miss at a glance. Both affect tension.

Somewhere in the recesses of my mind I seem to recollect something about adding a second spring to the 338LM, the second spring being weaker as to not create a "friendly fire" situation when ejecting an empty cartridge.
