Same die two different lengths

I just got done sizing some federal brass for my 300 win mag. Head space for my rifle is 2.274in I was knocking my brass back back to 2.271in... all good.

I went to size some winchester brass and it knocked it back to 2.265in, I didn't change the die didn't even take it out of the press, any thoughts on this?

Re: Same die two different lengths

Different metallurgy between the different kinds of brass... one springs back more than the other, that sort of thing.

The other thing it could be, if you happen to be using a factory expander plug... if Federal .300WM brass is thicker in the neck like it is in .308 Win relative to Winchester... the plug can 'pull' on the neck as the case is withdrawn from the die and 'stretch' the shoulder region, affecting headspace.

Pull the expander stem and lube the snot out of some cases of each type and see if the difference is still there - if it is, then its not the expander causing problems and you may have to adjust the die accordingly for the different brands of brass.

yeah that's what I think I'm gonna have to end up doing just adjusting the die for different brass. I have 100 federal brass that ill just wear out then use all my win brass, I got piles of win brass, seems to be better stuff anyways not as soft.

Thanks for the tip

Was the Winchester brass first fired through another rifle, or did it get fired in your chamber specifically? Was it new brass?

Those also might be issues.

I've seen some minute differences in HS when I've bushing sized the necks, w/o an expander ball, although not a pronounced as you're indicating.
