hey guys / gals, ive been shooting for the better part of 20 years now, mostly desert plinking and lots of hunting. a few years ago a buddy of mine bought a gun and we got into long range 600+ meters target shooting and hunting. he moved on and now a new buddy of mine just bought a 300wm rem senderoII all stock and im on the fence as to which to buy. i own and love the 7mm rm but ive heard great things about the 300 wm. If i want to stay competitive with my buddy's 300, will a well tuned 7mm rm do it or should i go with 300 wm and why or why not? I love the higher BC and flatter trajectory out to 1000 meters for 7 but i understand there are more options for the 300 as far as load goes (if thats the only benefit of 300 than this post is done). since im reloading i dont think that matters but im looking for the opinions from ya'all who have been sending lead 1000 + longer than myself. BTW the current rifle i have is a rem 700 sendero action+barrell in 7mm rm with MCM A4 stock and nightforce nsx 5.5-20X56 optics, no break... im looking forward to your advise.

Im no long range expert but, just looking at some numbers from Sierra, 7mm 180 SMK = .660 BC, 30 cal 240 SMK = .711 BC, Ever consider the 7mm RUM or 300 RUM? better fps out of them

Same ole answer. For a .30 to match the BC of the 7's you have to go really heavy. Plug in 2950 fps on a 180 7mm Berger or 3050 fps on a 168. Less recoil than the heavy .30's that it would take to match the BC.

Why in the world would you compare a 300WM with only a 168 and only 3050? Try putting in a 208 Amax doing 3000 and you'll have a more realistic comparison. And yes, there are ample here who do it. The recoil difference is nullified by a good brake.
But for the record, the 7RM will shoot the 180 Berger 3000 and give you a better capability.

7mm Rem Mag and don't look back. Like said above, 168 & 180 Bergers with Retumbo are hard to beat. HSM also makes good match grade hunting ammo that shoot's really good in my rifle.

To me, this is a no-brainer. 7mm for sure. Equal to, or better trajectory, more than adequate energy for ringing steel or taking game, less recoil.

Have you given much thought to the .264 Win Mag. I had one prior to my new 300WM but I am replacing it with another .264WM. Just love the .264, very mild recoil and really a great all around hunting round. I have shot matches, ground hogs and Elk. Really not much about it I don't like other than expect to get maybe 1000 to 1500 rounds out of it shootng 140's.
If I had to choose between the 7 and the 300 I would go 300 and run the 208 A-max.

A 1:8 will handle 162s and 180s also...
I think it would be foolish for anyone starting a high-capacity 7mm build to use anything slower than 1:8.5, with those 195s on the horizon.

I'd just stick with the 7mm. If you're trying to remain competitive with him, 162amax's or 168 vld's will work in your factory barrel. If you're planning on dropping some money, rebarrel with a match grade 7mm barrel. The 7mm doesn't give up anything, and the 162's won't punish you without a brake. I can put 40+ downrange with no adverse effects. I know guys with 300wm's pushing 208amax's that have sore shoulders after 15 shots without a brake.
As far as 300wm vs. 7mm, it's ford vs. Chevy. Both can win the race, but it's up to the driver.

I've got a .264 win mag and love it, but I'm debating the same question as the OP for one of my next rifle purchases. Those two calibers carry more energy than .264 at long range which is why I'm looking at them.

If you want to shoot 162 Amax's, the 7mm Remington Magnum is perfect. Why switch? If you want to shoot 230 grain pills, like I do, the 300 win is the way to go.

Hey guys/gals, thanks a ton for the wisdom. It definately solidified what my gut was kind of telling me. Again, ya'all thanks a million for your time, opinions and experience. Ill just stick with my my current build. but it sounds like im gonna be in the market for a new barrel for the new round at 195. im prob gonna go with sheilen since ive had good experience with them in past. Again thank you. look forward to more advice in the future.
