My buddy just sent me a picture of a broken bolt from his 270. Is that a common or rare occurrence? I told him to check with Savage 1st. I know he's had that rifle 25 years, it has notches cut all down it, for all the deer harvested with it.

Well, since you put it that way, I got up, cleaned two rifles and promptly forgot about this thread until I sat back down.

Here's the scoop. Three different manufacturers, three different actions.
Savage 10, Zermatt Origin, Kauger PRS.
All have swappable bolt heads using the same Savage style retention pin.

Here are the numbers for the pins:
Savage: length, .652, diameter, .243.

Origin: length, .660, diameter, .245.

Kauger: length, .680, diameter, .247.

The diameter differences don't amount to anything. They all fit each other.
The differences in length is only how the ends are finished. Savage is cut 90° and the Origin and Kauger follow closer to the bolt diameter contour.

The firing pin hole wasn't worth trying to measure, suffice to say that all of the firing pins have ample room to prevent contact.

In a pinch, I'd use any one I could get.

Google shows two savage style retaining pins, a .150 and a newer .100

I do t know but it seems like the new small hole may not fit an older larger lin u less they just designed a whole lot of extra space around it that they later deemed unnecessary. I’d measure my pin first to make sure it fits the hole.

Man, that's pretty skinny.
The firing pin looks to be over .100 where it passes through the retaining pin.
I wonder what they changed to make them that small?
(Diameter, don't say it😀)

I'm gonna have to look at a newer Salvage.

For the OP, if his rifle is 20-ish + years old, it's probably the .243 diameter.
Have your buddy give it a quick measurement to be sure.

He said 1999, so right on the cusp, he did also say pre-accutrigger. He's measuring right now.
