Rifle is a Savage 10 Precision Carbine ( 308 )
I was hoping that some cheaper ammo would shoot well, I tried the following (10 shot groups / 100 yds / slight wind / 65F)...

Prvi 147 FMJ -- on paper but all over the place
Prvi 150 SP -- 3-5 inch group
Prvi 165 SPBT -- on paper but all over the place
Am Eagle 150 FMJBT -- 3-5 inch group
S&B 147 FMJ -- 2 in or less

Now I will start by saying I'm sure at least some of this is my fault, because I have a Savage 10FP (.223) that is shoots cheap stuff ( win white box) 1/2 moa from a bench.

Also I didn't have any calipers so those are rough measurements based on the 1" squares on the target... Also I was shooting prone with bipod...

Obviously for me the S&B shoots far better than any of the others.
I've heard that S&B wasn't to SAAMI, it was TOO HOT, and others saying it was just overall junk....

Anybody got any experience with these or others I should try?
Thanks

Re: Savage 10 PC Range Report

If you want low cost and high performance, reload.

Otherwise, try some winchester 150gr like they sell at walmart. I've seen it work well with varying degrees of success from a 5R. Might work for you, who knows.

I dont think you will find it easy to get match grade accuracy without match grade ammo.

Re: Savage 10 PC Range Report

Also- try to locate some of the prvi match grade .308 ammo.

It's not that expensive and their 75gr .223 match stuff seems to work quit well from what Ive read.

I have no personal use experience with it though. But it's cheap enough to give it a try if you can find it.

Re: Savage 10 PC Range Report

Try some Ultramax 168gr BTHP out of it, as well as their 165gr BTSP ammunition.

The 168gr BTHP shoots extremely well out of my 10FPLE. I am selling this one to a buddy of mine, and I will be picking up a Precision Carbine to replace it. Hopefully the Ultramax performs well.

Re: Savage 10 PC Range Report

UPDATE:

So today at the range:
I removed the action from the "AccuStock" to adjust the AccuTrigger. I noticed that the one of the sling studs was higher than the aluminum bedding rail in the stock. I thought it might be contacting the barrel and interfering with the harmonics. So I backed the stud out until it was flush, and reseated the action. I tightened the screws to a scientific "hand tight".

I had american eagle and S&B left over. I also brought along some Fiocchi 150 FMJ.

Now, I don't know whether the stud was contacting the barrel, or the action was not seated well, or maybe it was too tight.... but, all three ( AE, S&B, Fiocchi ) shot well under 2" at 100yds and the Fiocchi shot just below 1". A guy at the range offered to let me shoot a few of his hand loads ( 168smk, 43 varget? ), which made a 3 shot clover ( 1 ragged hole).

So whatever happened with the re-seating of the action, made some kind of magic happen.

Re: Savage 10 PC Range Report

168gr SMK, 43gr Varget is my guns favorite load. Mines a 10FP Choate folder(20" barrel), put into a Choate UV stock. That load shoots to .5" every time. Reloading is a must, to get that good of accuracy. I seen your post with the 3-5" groups, and said WHAT!?! Glad ya got er fixed!

Re: Savage 10 PC Range Report

Good, you identified a problem. I would finish the fix by removing the stud, and reassembling it with a washer or two between it and the stock, so it can be tightened down properly while preventing protrusion on the other end. Even cardboard will work, if that's all you can find for a spacer.

The 10PC looks interesting, and the medium weigh 20" barrel appears to be a performer.

This is the first independent report I've read about the Accue-Stock and its performance. Sounds promising. Good fortune and safe shooting.

The 10FCP looks very nice, but I'd twist on my 28" .260 L-W barrel, and get the SSS DM extension kit.

First post here.

I have a Savage M10pc that I need to reload for. I haven't reloaded in 20yrs, so I feel like a beginner again.

168gr SMK
Is SMK a MFR or bullet type?

43gr Varget
Is Varget the type of powder?

What primers do you recommend?

Thanks
