A friend of mine has a Savage Model 110, chambered in 30-06. He had some guy load him up some rounds for hunting and he is now having issues. If he puts in a loaded round but doesn't fire it, when he goes to extract it bolt is a little hard to open but once the bolt is up it won't allow him to pull back. The same thing happens with a fired casing from the same rifle (a reload that has been fired). If he fires the round it then easily extracts. What in the heck is going on? It doesn't make sense that a round just fired will extract but if he waits a little and then puts that same casing in, it won't extract.

Re: Savage 110 Reload Problems

My first guess would be improper headspacing either of the rifle or the dies were set to generate long ammo. How does it work with factory loaded rounds and their spent cases?

Re: Savage 110 Reload Problems

i was thinking maybe the brass was neck sized instead of full length and the brass body is still sized for the previous gun.reason why i say this is i did it with my old 270 remington and they wouldnt even chamber in my friends 270 they were also seated out alittle.

Re: Savage 110 Reload Problems

The rifle handles factory ammo fine. As a matter of fact this same guy has loaded him up some ammo before and there were no issues. Now all of a sudden with this batch he is having issues. I don't know if the reloads were neck sized only or full-sized.

Re: Savage 110 Reload Problems

Too much crimp buckled the case just behind the shoulder. The case, now larger in diameter, sticks in the chamber. Firing the round restores the case to happy dimensions and it extracts easily. I have seen this a thousand times.

Re: Savage 110 Reload Problems

918V, the only problem is he's having problems even with the fired casings after they've been fired extracted and re-chambered. Once he puts an emptied (fired) casing into the chamber, by hand, then closes the bolt it won't extract again. When he does this same thing with factory ammo he has zero problems.

Re: Savage 110 Reload Problems

has he tried to extract an unfired factory round since the problem started? has he cleaned the lug abutments and extractor recently? it sounds more like a mechanical problem. the firing of the cartridge forces the bolt back and facilitates easy extraction. but loading a case and trying a manual extract doesn't have that advantage. i'll wait for your reply to my query before delving further.

Load too hot, case sticking? What is the load? Specify brass, powder, primers, bullet and OAL.

In your first post you said that the hard to chamber rounds extract easily after firing, but now you add that those fired casings are hard to chamber and extract. Is this immediately after firing, or after the gun cools down?

I only had one Savage, a 22-250, but all factory rifles behave this way because their chambers are so generous: When your load is too hot, the brass springs back less. The case extracts when the gun is warm due to the expanded state of the chamber, but it will not go back in when the gun cools down. If you force it in there, it will stick.

Otherwise your chamber may be rough and needs polishing.
