Okay guys, gotta question.

My great uncle has a Savage 17 Mark II just the standard light barrel version with synthetic stock.

Anyway, he has trouble with it in that it won't extract spent cases. It does it almost every shot (90% +). To me it seems like maybe a weak extractor but i'm not sure, maybe an overly tight chamber? This is not an ammo specific problem either, seems that no matter what he feeds it the problem occurs.

Any idea what's causing this or what a fix might be, before he decides to send it in to the factory?

Re: Savage 17 MK II

Have you checked all the screws? Be sure that the screws are tight just enough. Don't over tighten.

Check with a bore light the inside of the action and be sure that's it's clean. I don't mean a snake bore light, just a small bore light that are sold everywhere.

Be sure that the ammo is correct, I realize you said it wasn't the ammo, but check the barrel spec's to the ammo being used.

Re: Savage 17 MK II

Which screws are you referring to? The action screws? Thinking there might be a bit of play between the action and stock?

But to answer, the bore and barrel are clean, and we are feeding it the right ammo.

Yes, that was my initial thoughts. But looks like you got it covered. Those Mk models come from the factory with a weak bottom metal. But that shouldn't give him the type of problems he's having. Check the bottom metal since it's a quick look see anyway.

I can't think of anything else. Maybe someone else can chime in.

How about heading back to the range and trying this there.

Fire, remove the magazine, then extract. If it extracts without problems maybe then it is the magazine that prevents the case from being extracted.
