I have a savage 10fp in 308, hand loads are 175smk on fgmm cases, using 44.5 grains varget. oal 2.8. Scope is a vortex viper pst 6-24x50. Question is can accuracy change at longer ranges do to load. I get sub moa at 100 yards but at 500 and 1000 my patterns seem to be all over the place. I know that the grouping will get larger as range increases, and that the problem may be me. Just wanted to know if accuracy at longer ranges can be affected by load.

Re: savage 308 handloads

definatly changes , variations in BC and velocity cause your groups to open up downrange. If your groups group in a particular way , like an oblong group, thats a good thing. If it looks like a shotshell pattern , thats not.

another thing i notice is guys shoot 3 - 5 shot groups at close range , those are not enough shots to truly let you know how your rifle is grouping. Shoot 15-20 shots and see what the group looks like , that would provde a more definitive analysis of your guns accuracy. Allot of guys think they shoot 1/2 moa groups , but thats only 3-5 , their 20 shot groups open up to 1.5moa , which is probably what their 5 shot groups would look like at long range ( probably smaller but you might get my point)

Re: savage 308 handloads

How did you determine your load? With the FGMM brass I'm surprised you aren't seeing pressure signs. Same bullet, brass and powder I had ejector marks at 44.0 and I was seating longer than 2.80. Guess what I'm suggesting is you might not have the "best" load. I don't think you get as good of consistency if you're pushing the edge on max pressure. I ended up at 43.4 with that combo and Federal 210 primers. Worked at 300, 500 and 600. I've got a 20" barrel and couldn't get the MV I thought I needed to shoot the 175's at 1K so haven't attempted.

Just my .02, best of luck with it.

I worked up my loads at 100 yds with different charges best accuracy was at 44.5 grains, no signs of over pressur. Barrel length is 24". I did have a chance to shot through a crono this wekend For 3 rounds mv was 2748,2713,2755
