I have a model 12 varmit that is very accurate and has or had a great trigger pull. Lately it has started malfuctioning. Occasionally the accurelease blade will not depress with any amount of pressure that I can apply with my finger and the gun will not fire. Ocasionally the sear safety will engage when the accurelease blade is depressed but before my finger touches the trigger. Since that has started happening I have ben very careful to depress the blade straight back fully before my finger touches the trigger. That does not help the problem. This has been gradually getting worse and now results in about one malfunction in five shots. It is more frequent if I cycle the bolt rapidly but will also happen if I cycle the bolt slowly. The trigger has not been modified or adjusted since it left the factory. It gages 22 oz. on my pull gage. Other than increasing the pull weight is there anything that I might try before having a gunsmith look at it? I am fairly proficient in minor gun work and some trigger work but I would not consider myself a gunsmith.

Well, I can't help with "other than increasing the pull weight," but I'll share my experience. I had the same problem on my LRPV. A slight adjustment on the trigger, per the Savage instructions, cured it all. Mine is pretty consistent at 26-28 ounces.
Initially mine worked very well out of the box too. It seems these things wear in a bit and you need to adjust them.

I removed the action from the stock this afternoon. Checked the trigger pull again. It had gone to 16 oz. somehow. I adjusted it to 24 oz. The ajustment is very coarse. I doubt that I turned the spring more than 5 degrees. I then put some locktight on the part of the spring in the threaded body. Shot 30 rounds without a problem. I think it is solved.

So the rifle will fire with the accutrigger if the the trigger is adjusted too light or too heavy? I don't think you know how the accutrigger works. I've got mine set below 1 lb, if you push the blade sideways instead of straight back it will drop the sear. The rifle will not fire unless you recock it.

Respectfully- you need to read a little more about the Accu-trigger... because the gun will not fire if the trigger is adjusted too low. That is what that trigger is designed to prevent. If your trigger is adjusted so low that the sear does not catch then the blade in the center of the trigger catches it- preventing it from firing.

Hey, it can happen with just about anything mechanical. I have two Savage rifles, one a 110 in .223 and the other a 17 HMR. The accutriggers on both work fine, are crisp with no creep.

What you said was incorrect with regards to a savage accu-trigger. Sure- yours could be broken- or installed wrong or missing parts etc....

Your original reply said that you had "read" a lot about them. Didn't say you had used them at all. I only have one savage these days but it has thousands of rounds through it. While the accutrigger isn't for everyone they do work well. Are they as good as an aftermarket trigger, no. Mine started life as a 6.5 CM, then a 7 saum and now a .223, with the trigger set about 12 oz. Did your rifle actually fire a round? For rifles meant to be used in the field, I think the AccuTrigger is excellent. It's trigger safety mechanism is as good as it gets.
I also have a Savage Accu-trigger. It is the target version with the orange safety. I have it adjusted to 9oz. It is very consistent and reliable. In the beginning I adjusted it all over the place and did have some lock up issues now and then. I never figured out what caused it, but it has not locked at the current setting I have had now for a year or so. How much does the Timney add on help? I haven't gone there yet. I would like to hear from some first-hand experience. Maybe the problem goes away with this up-grade?

Well, personally I think the problem is you don't understand how it works.
Your story is changing- at first it was the design and all accu-triggers... and now it is all these issues you were having with a personal one. It's not a personal favorite of mine- but not a issue because savage rifles aren't either.
