LOL. That's what I would have done, too. It would then get a nut that matched the one on my other Savage.

We milled a hole in one and used a spanner. But honestly the pipe wrench and replace is what I'd probably do if I didn't have access to all the tools we do. I think the old style nut looks sexier anyway.

Second option from the top... </div></div>

That's what I figured was out there. Thank you sir!

A bud of mine is going to thread and chamber the new 6.5 barrel blank to fit my Savage and leave off the barrel nut. He's not charging me for the smithing, so I'll buy that wrench and keep it at his shop.

Kenda we all know you and your hubby think "sexier", just look at the avatar you picked girl...:) Good Fun

Couldn't get ours off with a strap wrench because the shoulder is too narrow. But it came with a divot already on the bottom. I made an aluminum clamp on a handle with a little stud that engaged the divot. Worked like a champ.

Most of the savageshooters guys use the pipe wrench method and get the barrel nut with the lugs... and yes I agree it does look better..... or rather what we are used to seeing.

Re: Savage barrel nut with no recesses, how to remove?

I know this thread is a year old, but where would you find an old style barrel nut that would fit? The do it yourself barrel change is a feature that might make me pick Savage over Remington but they seem to have mucked it up with these smooth nuts.

+1 on NSS barrel nut. Also if u think u might drop it into an aics get his lug. The SSS lug is too tall to fit in the lug recess.
