I was at my local gun shop today trying to decide what my next rifle will be (still got to finish my AR-15) but got the long range bug. They have the AR-30 for $1169 and the BAS for $1350. Doing some reading on these forums everyone is praising the Savage Model 10 FCP HS. They have one of these for $999. So they are all in the same price range, so my question is what are some opinions between these rifles. I have to admit how it looks means something and the BAS and AR-30 are good looking rifles. I also like the aluminum stock/forarms. My local range goes out to 400-yards and there is a range within an hour that goes out to 1000. This is my first post to the Hide, so Hello!

Re: Savage BAS and the Armalite AR-30

Welcome to the Hide !

First off, all of the rifles you listed are very capable rifles with quality optics, loads, and driver. For a factory rifle, the and AR-30 and Savage Model 10 FCP HS would be my choice, in that order. A factory Remington 5R is always a good choice as well, in that price range. The nice thing about the Rem, its the chevy 350 of rifles, which means a rifle you can build on. There are a fair amount of parts for the Savage as well.

Again, welcome

Thanks KRock. I guess with the BAS and AR30 I am shopping with my eyes, I just love the look of both. Is there an advantage with the 5R since it has a SS barrel over the rest? It just doesn't seem like many of the rifles talked about in discussion about factory rifles come with SS barrels. Reading other posts it seems to come down between the 5R, FCP-K and FCP-HS.

Re: Savage BAS and the Armalite AR-30

I own a Savage BAS and it is a great shooting rifle. My previous rifle was a DPMS LR-308 and coming off of that, the BAS was a good fit. Same exact grip, put my magpul PRS on it and away I went. The FCP-K uses the same action as the BAS minus the AI style DBM and the extended rails. So between those two its a coin toss of which stock/grip style you prefer.

Went to the gun shop today, they did not have a 5R, but he said he could get me one. He said it comes in 308 & 300 Win Mag. What are the benefits of one vs. other? I see the AR-30 comes in both as well.

Re: Savage BAS and the Armalite AR-30

If you are worried about Savage accuracy, don't. I own a Savage 12 bvss which has laminated stock in a 223. This is same action on the BAS model. I have shot my gun with hand loads out to 600yrds and hold 1.75 inch groups for 5 shots on calm day. That is not bad for off shelf gun.
