Well, my new rifle Finally came in this week, so I got it set up and and ready to roll by Wed. Yesterday was first trip to the range and this am I got to check out the scope a little more.
Savage Mark II-FV: 254.00 (after background check and taxes.)
BSA 4-16x40 MilDot: 80.00
Weaver X-high Quadlock rings: 20.00
Shooters Ridge bipod: 40.00
<span style="text-decoration: underline"> </span>
Total: $394.00
Initial shooting results.
All groups are 5 shots. Clean, "virgin" barrel when started. Did not clean during session.
50 yard:
CCI 40g Standard Velocity-1" (vertical stringing in 3/3 groups.
Federal 36g High Velocity HP-0.75"
Rem T-bolts 40g solid-0.8"
Aguila 60g subsonic-5/8"
100 yard:
Federal: 1.75"
CCI: 2.25" (more vertical stringing)
Aguila: 1.25"
Shot the Federals and Aguilas out to 150 today just to see where they hit. Aguilas seem to do really well in wind, but of course they drop very rapidly. Two out of 25 rounds showed signs of possible key-holing at 100 yards, but I didn't notice any others.
They do hit rather hard from what I can tell, though. Can't wait to do further testing.

I did a basic tracking test (think I've heard it referred to as a "box test"? Confused.) on the BSA. Made adjustments for five minutes up and five minutes right, shot, and hit the point I'd marked using the same point of aim. Went another 5 up and 5 right and hit the next point I'd marked while still using the same point of aim. Am I doing this test right? Clicked back down 5 and left 5, shot again, and then did it again to get back to my zero. Was right on where it should have been with every adjustment, so I'm happy.
That being said, I don't have a lot of confidence in BSA optics, but it's the only scope with the features I wanted/needed that I could afford at the moment. Also experimented with using the mil-dot ranging system a little bit. This was my first attempt, so I used targets of known size at known distances and then just worked through making sure I was getting sufficiently accurate measurements to get approximately the correct range. By the time I got done I was hitting with 5 yards of the right range every time. Any tips on how to improve in this art?
Also, I'm open to any suggestions on ammo that might shoot well out of this. I did very well with the CCI out of another gun, but I can't tolerate this tall, skinny groups! Bad lot maybe?
Happy hunting,
-The Kid.
