The Savage 12FV will be extremely accurate, no matter the caliber. The stock is crap though. What can you expect for the price.

I have one in 204 Ruger. It will shoot half to three quarter inch groups with any 40gr load.

I have a 12fv in 308.... Stockade Gunstocks "Woodchuck" stock, Vbull DBM, TPS base and rings, w/ a SS on top that'll shoot .5" @ 100yds w/ Ga Arms 175gr Match ammo

Ditto, mine has a Choate Sniper stock on it. Shoots 1/4" with 40Vmax and WC844 mil surp powder. Mine likes them seated to a 0.005 jam

Factory loads hover around an inch unless I pull the bullet partway out and then reseat to the proper depth, then they come back to 3/4"

The stock issue is being resolved as more and more Savage models get switched over to the AccueStock.

I had a 12fv 223 that was very accurate. The stocks are junk though. It's a great value rifle.

I might have to give some WC844 a try. I've been loading with W748. My savage preferred the 40gr Bergers over the VMax, Nosler Ballistic Tip, and Sierra 39gr Blitzkings.

I might have to give some WC844 a try. I've been loading with W748. My savage preferred the 40gr Bergers over the VMax, Nosler Ballistic Tip, and Sierra 39gr Blitzkings.

Let me know if you locate more of it, I have some friends that want some. It's mil-surp pull-down powder for the 5.56

Back when Pats Reloading had it I bought 32# of it.

Initially I was chastised for loading mil-surp powder. Several of those same people are now trying to help me get rid of the powder, I'm not selling

Not trying to hijack the thread but I didn't want to start a new one on such a similar subject so here goes. My son is considering a Savage 10 FCP w/McMillan A5 stock (in .308 ) He found a new one for just under $1000. I've never owned a Savage but from what I have read here and elsewhere it seems to be a great rifle for the money. Am I missing anything or is it as good a deal as it seems? I mean for under a grand, it seems to have a lot going for it. Any problems with this particular model or is it gtg? Thanks!

I should have added that it is a .308, factory new. I have a Choate sniper stock that my Stevens 200 in .223 sits in right now- I will likely switch stocks as the Stevens doesn't get shot much, and the Choate is overkill for that rifle.

sounds like a good deal.

If you want a mag fed stock You could buy a Savage varmint, Bell & Carlson Medalist tactical Stock and send it to CDI precision to have it inleted for their bottom metal and have a mag feed rifle and stock for under $1000.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Just as good if not better than H&S in my opinion. B&C Tactical Medalist ($210.00) stocks have the aluminum bedding just like H&S</span>

Amen on the Savage!! I have owned several .308s, both gas and bolt guns... the Savage wins hands down as the most accurate out of the box rifle that I have ever owned!!

Consider this, lots of folks say good things about the savage,the tag they add on,(value-gun), is the thing I wonder about. When you send a round down range,and its on -target.does the target or quarry feel better if its one brand or the other?

My feeling exactly, I have to laugh when people knock factory rifles or something that's not the "IN" action for building a rifle on. I have a couple k98's that shoot a lot better than guys toting high dollar customs.

The target/quarry don't know the difference unless you miss. A mauser can be dressed to shoot a lot better than probably 99% of the people who drive a trigger, spend more money shooting and learning the art/science than talking about how amazing your new custom shoots. That will produce the best increase in results.

NOTE: I'm not knocking the custom builders at all, I'm saying that people need to have the skills to drive such scalpels before they can see a difference in the level of precision. Just like the person who can barely ride a bicycle thinks that hopping from an R6 to an R1 will mean that all of the sudden they can slide two wheels and drag knees at the race track. More likely than not they're going to be dragging knees..as well as elbows, shoulders, helmets, bodwork and other expensive pieces as they slide down the roadway.

I mentioned earlier that it's a great value gun, and maybe I should have expanded on that. If you want the most accuracy, for the least amount of money the 12fv is THE gun. I'm not knocking savage or any of their rifles, but my 12bvss wasn't any better than my 12fv. The only difference was the blued vs stainless and the stock. I'd love to buy one of the new 12 series thumbhole stock 223's. If those shoot as well as they look, I'm in.

I have the new Savage 10 FCP-K.. with the brake and the accu-stock etc.

It's a great rifle. does exactly what I want it to and wasn't expensive.

The accu-stock is such an improvement over the old tupperware stocks.

spend a few hundred more ( the MSRP difference is slightly over $200) and get the 10 FCP-K. The features are worth it. The Accu-stock is great so far. The DBM system is good but it still only holds 4 rounds. However, loading is easier and you can get a few extras until you make the decision to go with an aftermarket such as CDI Precision( when they come out with the action spacing version) or Vbull.

Any stock upgrades are in my opinion negated by the accu-stock and a quick application of a karsten cheek piece.

How much engagement are the screws actually getting?
Where is the contact?
Is it right?
Does it shoot?

the FTR is well out of his assumed budget, with not much gain over the FCP-K and certain not for repeatability purposes as the FTR is a single-shot. The only gain is the target Accu-trigger and its not necessary.

Love my LRPV .223, but the single shot aspect is a bit of a pain for follow on shots.

you can get 9 round mags from Sharp Shooter Supply then you won't have the extra expense of the Vbull or CDI precison version.

it already has the knob, bull barrel, accutrigger, don't believe it has the accustock, however for a few more $ look at the 10 LE series that come with all of the above with mcmillians, choates, hs precisions. a few come with a factory brake on it.

savage has almost all the options one could want in a bolt gun with accuracy behind it out of the box, usually for a lower price than most, which leaves some bread for better glass and other accessories.
