SBR w/ suppressor questions

I currently live in a state that allows suppressors but does not allow SBR's. I'm looking to make a dedicated suppressed upper and I'm not really thrilled about a ~ 21 inch (16" barrel and 5 to 6 inches for a can). My plan is to buy a noveske 14.5 mid length lo-pro w/vis and have it cut down to 11.5 inch barrel length. This upper would have a welded on AAC Ranger 2 or 3 to bring the total length to around 16.5 inches.

Am I correct that the vltor vis is one of the few options that would allow a smith to take off the barrel (for any kind of gas port adjustment etc) without cutting the welds on the suppressor?

Will the ranger 2 suppressor provide a similar amount of back pressure vs the 3 inches of barrel that is going to be lost?

I'm trying to find a balance so the gas action cycles just like a non suppressed mid length without a huge increase in fouling or action damage.

I've searched for hours and only found one post where someone cut down a 16" mid length and said it only cycled w/ a suppressor...and I've read tons of other posts that said "no way, why, etc" .

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

more then likely the smith you take it too to do the work is going to cut the barrel screw the can on do any adjustments to the gas system then weld the can into place.

Your best bet is to just start with a barrel blank that hasn't been drilled yet and allow the smith working on it to tune the gas port size specifically to run with the can otherwise i would recommend some sort of set screw type adjustable gas block and just set it and forget it (after a few rounds you wont be able to turn the screw anyways).

It sounds like a cool project for the rules your given to work around. If you could own sbrs i would tell you to not be cheap and just pay the extra $200 but as it sits should be a neat gun

Or you get the LMT MRP upper with the 10.5 factory barrel and get a suppressor in the 5.5 to 7 inch range. I think the LMT barrels are ported to work with suppressors from the factory. I am looking into this because we are in the same boat here in Michigan.

It should solve two problems one with the SBR work around and one it will be simple two minute process to take off the barrel and put the can in an ultrasonic cleaner. You can also switch to a conventional barrel in two minutes if you want to run something else. I am still trying to find out if this is a legal option though.

"Huge increase in fouling" goes hand-in-hand with suppressed fire, no way around it.

Were you military, by any chance? Firing suppressed is almost as dirty (ALMOST) as putting a BFA (blank firing adapter) on a SAW and running a few belts through it on a humid day.

I have a standard 10.5" LMT upper. It runs great with or without my suppressor.

Thanks for the responses so far...

LMT looks like they have some great choices. In particular the 12" piston upper listed on the website. The current AAC suppressor I'm looking at is only 6 inches long. With a 10.5 barrel that is threaded ~.6 inches I will be just short of the 16" needed.

It sounds like a suppressor causes the system to run dirty even if the gas system is optimal. That is not a problem as long as I can get in ~ 500 shot per day w/ some lube added along the way.

Anyone else?

i didnt see it anywhere, but will there be an issue with cleaning it or it collecting dirt that will lead to rust or corrosion? I had thought you didnt want to leave cans attached permanently due to this.

IMO I would go with a pinned QD attachment to make it the legal length. Suppressors are fun on semi's but as stated super dirty. I would just want the option to take it off. Otherwise look at the SBR in the Heatseekins thread it would do what you want and looks amazing!
