I just bought an RCBS rangemaster and its not wanting to stay calibrated. Exaample: drop a charge in the pan, get wieght, load case, put pan back on scale' scale reads -0.2. Sometimes it re-zeros most of t5he time not. I use the calibrating wieghts and it reads true but once you remove the pan the problem starts, most of the time. Is there a warm up time for these scales? It didnt come with the instruction manual. Any comments or ideas please. I did call RCBS and they said to return it with $35 and they would send me a new one no questions asked. That is cheap enough just thought I would check with you guys before I put it in the mail.

Re: Scale not staying calibrated

There was definitly a warm up period, 20 minutes for the older scales, temp was an issue also. The new Chargemaster scale isn't so finicky to warmups, but man do florescent lights mess it up!

Very true, but I don't think many are aware.

Re: Scale not staying calibrated

Sometimes the drift is due to noise on the AC line the scale is plugged into (fluorescent lights, computer etc). Try a different socket and circuit just to see if the drift is still present.

I find it interesting (or disturbing) that so many people have problems with their Chargemasters. Mine doesn't drift a tenth of a grain ever. It is 4 feet below a florescent shop light and in my garage which isn't that temperature constant. I have a solid bench anchored in the concrete foundation of my garage and I think that helps a lot. Also, I once had a problem with wacky, seemingly random reading, but it turned out to be a few grains of Varget down in the load sensor hole under the pan. I blew it out with some computer "dust off" and it was back to its normal 100% reliable self.

Re: Scale not staying calibrated

Well my room temp is fairly consistent there is fluresent light apx. 8' away. I turnedit on last night and left it. I hope it's just me not letting it warm up.

Re: Scale not staying calibrated

I still use the old Lyman 10-10 beam as I had a bad experience using electronic scales with pistol powders a few years back.
Will buy another electronic scale for rifle to use at the range, but keep the Lyman 10-10 for checking. Although electronics are lovely, tried and proved are hard to beat.I like em all.

Re: Scale not staying calibrated

I tried an electronic scale in my garage and its a no go; drifted in non-predictable rates. Abandoned the scale and went back to a Ohaus 10-10. Works every time, no matter the lighting or moderate drafts.

Re: Scale not staying calibrated

I just ordered a 5-0-5 from Scott Parker. My Lyman 1200 has been getting more, & more erratic by the day. Worked fine for several years but now Im done with electronic scales.

Re: Scale not staying calibrated

Scott's scales are the standard I go by and never let me down and if you use a digital scale I think it's almost a necessity to have another scale to use to double-check it and keep it honest as those digitals can be sketchy.
