Earlier this week I had a response to a WTB Optic I posted. Seller sent me photos on request with a piece of paper/user name/date (which looked legitimate, but I’m assuming it’s someone who was VERY good at photoshop). The photos all passed a TinEye check, English was reasonably well written for internet communication, and the requested sale price was slightly above reasonable sale price with apparent wiggle room. Scammer’s account had been around 5+ years, not very many posts (mostly all PX posts), with a few positive Feedback stats (and a few of those feedback submitters had multiple feedback stats from well known member). A few more messages between us and we had a price agreed on. I obtained a PayPal account email which was a general guy’sname @gmail.com. I tried sending funds and PayPal refused the transaction, providing a message that they perceived a scam payment and blocked the transaction.
I message back and Scammer says he doesn’t know why that would happen, and provides “his girl’s” email (again, general girl’
[email protected]). At this point I was obviously concerned, and began to message some other members who had previously sold items in the PX where Scammer had posted in their thread stating “I’ll take it.” Got a response back from one whose account appeared legitimate (some actual technical input on non-BearPit threads and numerous positive PX feedback, again some coming from established members) who stated he’d worked with Scammer in the past on a purchase and all went well. While waiting, Scammer sent me a message asking if I was able to send funds to the second email, but was reasonable and polite when I explained my concerns and that I was working through outside methods to verify his legitimacy. Radio silence for 2 days while I worked that out.
After some confirmation from prior seller, I tried sending funds to the second email address; got the same message from PayPal - Scam prevention, funds blocked.
Scammer advises trying to get my bank to override PayPal’s protections, and suggests ApplePay as a second avenue, providing a phone number with a zip code matching the Scammer’s supposed State (location posted in Bio). I tried texting with that number, getting in contact with a very confused guy who has never heard of SnipersHide. Reported Scammer and member has been removed.
They’re not all total morons out of a call center in India. Careful out there.
