I bought an SB Short dot 1.1x-4x-24 to go on my lwrc .308 20in barrel and noticed that while I own 400m and closer I dont have enough magnification horsepower past that. What scopes should I look at if I sell my short dot? NXS? Leopold Mark 4? S and B 3-12-50? Thoughts are appreciated. Rifle shoots to 1100 with the suppresor mounted.

You might be able to get your SB modified to the new short dot 1-8x24. My friend is in the same boat and they seemed pretty confident that could upgrade his to the newer model.(Dont expect a quick reply) My other choice would be the new SB 3-20, that is a great power ratio for that type of rig you have IMO.

IOR 1-8, I believe you can get them with .308 BDC turrets.
Shot one on a Mk12 (5.56 AR) and it works outstanding out to 500M(farthest i have tried it at)

It is on the German SB website they have the 1-8 shortdot listed on the Euro website not the US version. Also IOR is coming out with a 1-10 power optic this summer that will be priced really well.

I don't think what they meant is that you can send them your 1.1-4 Short Dot and they turn it into a 1-8 Short Dot, I don't even think that's possible. Sure the main tube diameters are the same but the erector systems are probably completely different, the objective diameters are different, and the main tubes have some dimensional differences also. All of that kind of preculudes converting one to the other. After reading it I think what they are referring to is that you can take your 1.1-4 out of whatever mounting solution you have it and drop the 1-8 right in its place. This is somewhat of an advantage considering that other 1-8 optics are using a 34mm main tube which means a different mounting solution is going to be necessary.

This proves one thing......no matter what you have, there's always something else that's more appealing.
You might look at a 2.5-10X24mm Nightforce optic.

Considering the price of S&B's, having to change the mounting system from 30mm to 34mm for another brand is small potatoes.
Sending an optic in for a reticle change or turret upgrade is one thing, but to re-work all the internals would be like having your car totalled in an accident but the insurance company wants to pay to have it fixed. When you get it out of the shop, its never the same.

If you just want a little more magnification, look at the 4-16x42. Light and low profile.

I don't think they have any plans to lower the price on the 1-8, (or 1-4 for that matter) apparently it has been very costly to develop, hence the $1000 increase on the originally listed price.
Leupold's new Mark 6 1-6x20, which has a 34mm tube, is an FFP, and has an Aimpoint bright reticle is starting to look like an attractive option at $2k.

leupold usually releases new products pretty quick, and I hope they release before end of Spring. I am hoping to pick one of the 1-6x20 and the 3-18x44. Both look like phenomenal products.

I really like the S&B 1-8X Short Dot from everything I have read and the videos done by a couple of the hide members here, but at $3500 I think the overall cost overrules any perceived advantages for me when I can get a way better MIL discount through Leupold on a CQBSS around the $2K mark. For a higher 10X plus magnification optic I think the price for the glass would be justified but not for just 8X.......

This sentiment may be echoed by many but it is important to understand that the technical difficulties involved in an 8x erector ratio coupled with those involved in a dual focal plane illumination system are such that it is really much easier to make the crystal clear 5-25x long range scope than the 1-8x dual role sniper / CQB variety. PR tells me that the assembly time on the 1-8x is literally double that of one of their sniper scopes. While it may be worth more to many individuals to have a $3.5k scope on their bolt gun than on their AR or SCAR I do not think that there is much more profit for the company on the former than the latter. In fact, my guess it that there is less profit. PR almost decided to drop the 1-8x after fully designing it, twice, and having a very nice looking scope at that because they were uncertain of marketability.
