I'm interested in getting a suppressor for my G19's .22 conversion. Anything I need to know first? Recommendations on what to get?
I'm also curious about one for the G19 when it is in 9mm mode. I'd need a new, threaded barrel (recommendations here?) plus the price of the suppressor and tax stamp - so would it be worth it? Does 9mm suppress well enough?
Keep in mind this is mostly just for fun, but would be handy once zombies take over
Well, I was hoping to have some sort of two way dialog with people who have experience with the subject but apparently that's asking too much on a discussion board.
There's a TON of info on these very topics on this site. The answers to many of your questions boil down to preference or are subjective. You really need to research, draw conclusions on your own, and then try and get hands on with some of the gear. But, set's see if I can give you a kick-start... Keep in mind that this is based on MY experience and preference. Everybody will have there own ideas and know the "best" of this or that.
Purchasing an NFA item is a pain... $s with an attorney to set up a trust, $s on an item that many times I can't touch until I'm committed to buying, paperwork, up to a year's wait, dealing with potential gunsmith work/custom parts, etc. Is it worth it... to me YES! I'm almost at the point that I don't want to shoot an unsuppressed firearm.
Rimfire cans... I run a SWR Spectre II, a SilencerCo Sparrow II and an AAC Pilot II. Each has pluses and minuses... (weight, length, rated for 17 HMR/22 Mag, first round pop, ease of cleaning, etc.) I tend to use the Pilot II on my pistols the most. It's my lightest/most compact can. A 22 pistol sounds almost like a pellet gun with any one of the cans on it. Shooting subsonic ammo (or any ammo that stays subsonic out of a pistol barrel) is "Hollywood" quiet.
9mm can... I run an AAC Tirant 9 on my Glock 17. Great can, but I have nothing to compare it to. With 147 grain ammo it is surprisingly quiet or maybe I should say "less loud". It's nowhere near Hollywood quiet. You may need higher sights to see over the can. Glock + can = "wow" factor with friends, but I have to admit that I don't feel compelled to always run the can on the 9mm like I do with other firearms.
Glock threaded barrels... I use LoneWolf barrels with success. Storm Lake is another manufacturer. I hear good and bad about both.
Multi-purpose cans... You can get a can that is rated/designed to run both 22 rimfire and 9mm. Potential trade-off MAY be less noise reduction for the 22 due to the over-sized bore (9mm), additional weight/size (a 9mm can is going to weigh nearly double a dedicated 22 can), less flexibility (only one can).
Hope this helps.
