Scope base attachmnet?

how well does a stock remington 700 hold its scope base with the factory sized screws?

ive seen custom 700 actions that they open up the holes and attach the base with 8-40 screws x 4.

ive seen some that take 6 8-40 screws.

some that do all that and then are pinned to the receiver.

then some that have lugs too.

and then i think ive read AI does all that and then glues them down.

so i was just wondering if the factory rail attachment on a 700 was inadequate and if so, has anyone had a scope base come off in the field?

I have one 700 that gets knocked around pretty good. It has standard attachment setup for the base and it has stayed put. I can think of 3 pretty good bumps and all has been well.

Lots of times the base may need to be bedded to the rifle to get a good fit though. Fwiw, that rifle may benefit from that, but it shoots well enough for what I do with it that I havent bothered to do that.

I really think that it is preference, however I have had to have the base screws enlarged due to a screw breaking off. But that was on a 30 year old rifle!!

I have never bedded a scope base, but it is a fairly common practice, I just have never done it...

I have a question to go along with this tho! If you do bed the base to the rifle what are ya'll using to do that with?

Typically, when you see a #6 opened up to a #8 screw on a Remington 700 action, it's because they had to re-drill and tap the holes from a screw getting stuck, stripped, or broken. Not all the time but typically. More often than not, the 4 #6 screws are adequate. Having a recoil lug helps too.

As for bedding, JB Weld is a good/common product used.

If you handle your rifle with care and respect, conventional mounting parts are adequate to your needs. If you subject your rifle to rough handling, you'll be wanting to upgrade the mounting parts to a more ruggedly durable grade.

There are a lot of folks who consider the latter approach to be advisable, regardless of their intended manner of usage. I will not fault their judgement.

My own preference is to employ conventional mounts and to accept a personal responsibility for any failure on my part to handle my rifle with a degree of care that ensures that those mounts will be adequately durable.

JB weld works great, and it's easy to use. Love it on my Savage 110.

I use the JB weld kwik and do not bother with release agent, just mix, apply, screw it on and trim the excess after 5 min

to remove just put the hot air gun on the base for a few min, remove the screws and tap with a mallet - the hot air gun makes the epoxy peel right off both surfaces
