Scope caps

Watching....I find the eyepiece cap on my aluminas sometimes flips back under recoil and pings me annoyingly in the head, so I can't use it...wasted money. Something that locks open would be nice.

I've used Tenebraex, AAD Mount, Vortex Defenders and obviously Butler Creek. My favorite so far is AAD Mount.

My only problem with Tenebraex is after long periods of heavy use, I've had a few rotate down in the path of the bolt throw under recoil, ended up taking quite a bit of skin off of my thumb. However I think my case is an anomaly. Otherwise they are phenomenal caps, especially for easy and constant removal.

AAD Mount is secure and very heavy duty, I feel like they may be too stiff and could potentially cause problems with the lack of flexibility, I have yet to run into such a scenario though. I run them both on my AR and my bolt gun.

Vortex Defenders are like a "one size fits all" scope cap. Good intentions, and sound theory, however the actual cap is tighter than the cup that goes around the occular, and always came out to flip the cap up, it would partially pull it off the scope, requiring it to be pushed back on to the scope. This happened with my Leupy Mk6, Vortex Razor G2 and my buddy's Vortex G1 and PST G2.

Ive had the same problems with vortex, though at least the build quality is good for an aftermarket option. Ive been very happy with my several sets of tenebrex, but I'm about to order an aadmount to try.

On the aadmount, how firmly do they hold in the open position? The problem I am having is that under recoil, my Leupolds flop back into the halfway closed position and ping me in the forehead.

Need something that either locks to a magnet, or firmly resists closing enough to overcome the recoil impulse.

The spring on the AAD Mount caps are more than strong enough to keep them down. As the cap sits parallel and does not have a 90* position, I don't think it will have any tendency to flip under recoil, although I haven't used them any magnum calibers.

I have been using the Vortex Defender cap but I use a piece of 3M Scotch linerless rubber splicing tape around the ocular and objective bell a pull the rubber over it. The splicing tape holds it rock solid (almost bonded to the rubber) and it's under the the rubber and you can't see it. You can pull it (intentionally) off with no damage to the scope or cap

Ordered the Aadmount to try. What width tape do you use under the Vortex? I'm going to give this a try. 30mm thick, I assume?

SLG, The actual name is Scotch 2242 rubber electrical tape. It is .75" I got it at Lowes. It stretches and bonds to itself.

The Aadmounts are brick shithouses. They stay closed, stay open and stay installed. The only thing I don't care for about them is the finish. It's kind of "pewter" or rough finish. I have Tenebraex caps that came with my ZP-5's. I really like them and their finish is smooth. The Tenebraex are not as stout as the Aadmounts, but in their favor, the Ocular cap can rotate without removing it. Handy if you are playing around with focus.....but that's not something that most people (myself included) do very often.

I am confident you will be very happy with the Aadmount caps. Also, I'd suggest just installing the Aadmounts and wait before trying the tape trick. I think you will find it isn't necessary. If it becomes necessary, great. Looks like a simple fix.

I really like the objective cap from Tenebraex on my S&B 5-25. The ocular cap was good as well but I have a KAC level on my rail and the size of the cap was too big for me to see it. Have you ever tried to take one of those things off? It was a chore to say the least. Good grip on the scope for sure. I went back to the Butler Creek Ocular cap and can now see the level under the scope without losing eye relief on the shot. Push button opening is somewhat nice as well.

Tenabraex are very well built caps. Some others may be well built as well but I doubt they could be better. They would just work for your application better than the rest.

If it’s a scope cap I can break it/it will break. IMHO they’re not suited for PRS or sticking scope and rifle through a hole barely big enough for scope and rifle (like those fucking stair stages, or the diamonds on some Viking baracades). I now just throw a neoprene hood over it if it’s raining or I need to protect it for some reason. I’m much happier not having caps on my comp rifle and not having to worry about them or mess with them. I get pissed when gear fails even when I’m abusing it, and PRS is totally abusive to scope caps.

Got my tape today in the mail from Amazon. Unbelievable. The once sloppy and easily displaced Vortex caps now lock on like they mean it. Thanks very much for the tip!
