I will be hunting with an older Remington Model 700 Carbine in .308 Win this upcoming deer season in Pennsylvania. My shots will be anywhere from 100-300 yards. I will be using hunting loads in the 150 grain to 185grain range. I want to put a short compact scope on the rifle that has good clear optics. More often than not, my deer shots have been in the 120-150 yard ranges over the past several years. I know there is some awesome class out there, but I need to keep costs down to the $400-$500 range. I was thinking in power range: 2-7, 3-9 or maybe 2-10. I know you guys will have some good ideas. Thanks, PAT.

There are about a million good choices for an all around hunting scope. The 3-9x40 is the most common for a reason, they are pretty much a perfect blend of size, weight, mag range and price. If I could justify another scope kicking around my house for a hunting setup, this would be my choice; hands down. For the price it would be tough to beat:

Another excellent option is the discontinued Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40's:
