Rifle Scopes Scope covers breaking on NSX

Hay guys, i'm just looking for ideas. I purchased a #18 Butler Creek scope cover cap for the occular lens for my NF 5.5-22x50 and i've had two of them break at the same point. I've had many BC caps over the years and this is the only time it's ever happened. I don't know if it's the cold up here, or if they've went to a different manufacturing process. I pulled this cap off and am currently using my factory rubber on the scope tell i figure out what's up.

I'm open to suggestions on different caps, brands, etc.

if you call butler creek/bushnell and tell them, they will send you a new one out at no charge. I just had one replaced that was purchased new with a weak spring. maybe it helps cause i'm LEO but its worth a shot

Thanks 307 i'll give them a call. Maybe they can explain it to me. I've always had other things happen to them, the retaining pin falls out and i loose the spring is my biggest issue. but so far i've gone through 3 of these caps, starting to piss me off because i'm spending more time replacing them than shooting through them.

I had a new one break in the same place. My other ones have lasted years of hard use. Are they using a different plastic formula on the newer ones? Pisses me off because I have to mail order everything where I live and I hate waiting for stuff.

May have been a bad batch of plastic, if its too cold or dry when the plastic has been moulded and is curing, it can become brittle and break easier. And being at the hinge, that is where the most stress is put on the cap. I wonder if they were made around the same time from the BC plant. Hopefully they can help ya out.

I went back to the factory bikini rubber covers the end of last year. Tired of fighting the Butler Creeks. $0.02

Hey guys,

Butler creek caps have gone downhill in quality. I ordered one for my NXS 56 obj, would not shut and stay shut at all. Ordered another one hoping it might actually work, same problem occurred, just not as bad.

The problem was the hinge at the top was to far forward, so the cap was not closing to form a solid seal. It would seal at the bottom but not at the top. I ended up pulling the cap apart and increasing the diameter of the hole in the flip cap part only. This allowed the flip cap to move a little and therefore shut at 90 deg like it should have in the first place.

Hard to explain exactly what i mean, bottom line is i think their caps are shit now, and i won’t be buying anymore anytime soon.

Need a new company to start producing another option, one that works...

I have a question on these, I actually have a couple on NXS scopes and was going to order one more set, but when looking to see what # I need, the objective says 51 (56mm obj) and the eyepiece say 18 19 20. Why does the damn thing have three sizes stamped in it, so which one do I order??

I break two or three a year, usually jamming the rifle into a corner and busting the cap off on a wall or a barricade. I figure it's cheaper than replacing a sheared windage knob and, with the kind of abuse I give it, it's probably not the fault of the cap.

Anybody have experience with the Leupold Alumina covers - Leupy webpage says they go up to 56.

I have BCs from about 8 yrs ago and they are tight. Bought some new ones last year and the rear one won;t stay closed.

I put an Alumina 50 on my NXS. Fits perfect and is very high quality. Another bonus is that they screw on so they do not add to the outside diameter of the objective bell. This worked out well on my POF since I wanted to get the scope as low as possible. When I mounted it with high rings the scope cleared but there was not enough room for BC caps or the stock bikini caps.

Downside is they are pretty pricey and the cap has that gold Leupy medallion on it. The medallion problem is fixed with a black target dot.

As far as the Alumina 56mm, I believe all the Leupy 56mm scopes have that funky scallop in it to clear the barrel and the Alumina caps are the same so no go on a NXS.

I would like to see if their eyepiece caps would work but I believe they are also threaded and as far as I can tell the NXS eyepiece is not.

Same here. I like the bikinis the best. Tie them on with some jute, leather, cord, etc. I've broken off everything else or had the flip ups in the way of a baseball cap, or bind up a ergo parallax adjustment, or focus of the reticle, get in the way of running the bolt, whatever.

Thanks for the info, have been considering the Leupy caps for my 50mm NXS but wasn't sure if they would fit.

The BC caps that are on it now are shit, they barely open and close plus the popping sound is very loud compared to a two year old set on another scope. I can agree that the quality of BC caps has gone downhill lately..

Dont Bushnell own BC now? or did they always own them?

Enmerdeur, looking good mate, petty they don't make round ones for the 56obj.

No. The NF eyepiece is not threaded, at least the NXS isn't.

whenever i have enough room ive been mounting my butler creek objective caps with the hinge on the bottom. when i mount them like this the cap flips down onto the barrel and is less likely to get broken off. it works best on my ar though because i have a little more room on that setup.

i had 2 break off this hunting season when i was putting the rifle back into my eberlestock and i hear that familiar sound of a cheap plastic cap bouncing of the rocks.

i think ill try the lupy magnet caps upside down next

does anyone know who makes the aimpoint rubber flip up lense cover? they seem to be a little more flexible may survive a few more bumps.

i am done breaking and replacing those damn things too, went with the bikinis tied to the front ring, haven't broken or lost any yet

Mine broke in the same location. My rear occular cap flipped up during use because I bumped the red thumb button. I then bumped the open cap and it snapped off.

I think I'll try the bikinis or scopecoat.

I'm going to first try an objective cover on my occular before going to bikinis. I like those better, my objective one stays shut better. I am also going to trim the tabs so they don't get bumped and open unless I WANT them open.


I broke my occular carrying it through the woods on a deer hunt, second time in the woods with that rifle. Disappointing.

The bikinis are the way to fly. Zip tie them to the scope and rock on. Hell, I even put a NXS bikini on my Vortex Razor....

I solved my scope cover problems by using a strip of tire inner-tube. Just cut to desired width and stretch over each end of the scope. Nearly as good as the scope coat, and it costs, are you ready??!, exactly nothing. If you lose one, no big deal, just cut another. Not pretty, but very functional and provides a bit of 'interference' for those inevitable bumps that come w/ equipment use.
