Rifle Scopes Scope for 243/ 6mm

Hi everyone,

Just getting back into the sport and most of what I will be doing is longish range (for me anyway) varmint hunting here in Australia.... Mostly Rabbits, Foxes, Goats, Pigs out to 400+yards as well as plenty of target shooting.

I don't have a huge budget for the scope as I have a wedding coming up otherwise it wouldn't be an issue.

Anyway - Less than $500 (closer to $400 is better) - What do you suggest?

I've looked at the FAQ for under $350 and it seems my choices are

a) Millett TRS-1
b) Vortex Viper (HD if can stretch it)
c) Nikon Monarch

The other additional question is - What power should I be looking at? 4-12x50? higher? do I need a 50mm? will 44mm be enough?

I've been hunting since I can remember (before I was 10) but not a lot in the past 5-10yrs (I'm now 33).

Suggestions and advice would be great,

Blake very similar shooting to me....4-16 x 44 ideal, you could get away with 12 but if you want to punch the odd target and challenge yourself on the long range rabbits the 16 is the way to go....have a look at the vortex viper they are really grouse scopes (i got one and couldnt be happier) at a great price with a great warranty...cant go wrong...I reckon the x50's look too big on a hunting rifle...sadly due to our govermints taxing regimes you'll save hundreds buying on line in the US

I have had nothing but bad experience with Nikon so I would suggest to stay away from them. I've also had mixed reviews for the Vortex, a lot of people have good things to say and a lot of others have the opposite opinion. Give redneckbmxer24 a pm, I am sure he would be glad to help you out. He explained a lot of information about different scope manufactures, where good/bad optics come from and his overall opinion on different optics.

From my standpoint, on a budget like that I would look into the Bushnell Elite lineup. They have a variety of scopes starting in the mid 400 price range. I have heard really good reviews for the Bushnell Elites, and for my build I am probably going to go with and Elite Tactical until I can afford a NF.

You are also going to need to take into consideration FFP vs SFP scopes. Again, redneckbmxer24 helped me out there.

I had considered Bushnell in the past... well actually B&L before they were bought... I'll have another look at their offerings and see what I think - thanks for some pointers

Front Focal Plane vs Second Focal Plane.

FFP is basically an optic where the reticle is in front of the magnification ring so that the reticle grows/shrinks as you dial the magnification. This allows the reticle to hold its value through all magnifications.

SFP is the exact opposite. The reticle is behind the magnification ring and stays at a constant size throughout the entire magnification range. With SFP the reticle only holds is at value on one predetermined setting and usually you can set reference points at max and min power.

Another part to the whole mix of it is the turret/reticle value. You will find with mRad (mil) or MOA. It is ideal to keep your turrets and reticle within the same form of measurement either mil/mil or moa/moa. That is a whole other topic that can be quite extensive.

You should be able to find a lot of this information on the forum as well. I am no expert at this but I have gained a decent amount of information by doing some research and asking questions where I get stuck. I have no problem giving advice where I can, so don't hesitate to ask.

Welcome to the Hide! It really is no problem, this is a great community for those with that same purpose. And I'll tell you, it is no joke when they say that it becomes an addiction! I'm sure you will have fun with it.
