I am currently using a leupold 1-5x but when I get past 400yards I can't hit a ptarmigan consistantly. I am looking at getting a nightforce 2.5-10x32 or vortex viper 2.5-10x40. Will I be dissapointed with the vortex or dissapointed that I spent an extra $1000 on the nightforce?

They both have illuminated reticles and zerostop. If I go nightforce should I use thier velocity reticle or an NPR-1 etc.

Re: scope for ar-15

I don't think you would ever be disappointed in the NF. The 2.5-10x32 is a great choice. I think the now-discontinued 2.5-10x24 is an even better choice form-factor-wise. Reticle depends on your preference and style of shooting. I go with MIL/MIL

Re: scope for ar-15

I honestly think both the nxs 2.5's are worth the investment and should last a lifetime given you pick the right ret. and adjustments for your personal taste.

I have the LV in the x32 and its a very user friendly ret. If you take the time to do the NF calc's and the properly sight in that particular load, its very accurate all the way to 600yds....makes a helluva piece of glass for an 18" SPR/Mk 12 gun as well.

Re: scope for ar-15

I have a Vortex Viper on my .308. Earlier this year I was looking for a scope. After pestering people half to death and doing a lot of reading I bought the Vortex. I couldn't justify a $1500 or $2000 scope.
The glass on my Viper is very good. Since an AR won't be shooting as far as the .308 I don't know if I would put a NF on it even if I had the money to spend. I think it's more scope than an AR needs.
My Vortex is the 6.5-20x44. It isn't a NF, or S&B, etc. but it is a good scope.

Re: scope for ar-15

Do the zerostop come with turret caps?

I think I am going with the vortex scope for the AR-15 and a nightforce for the 7WSM. The 7WSM is a hunting rifle so I am going with the velocity reticle on it. For the hunting rifle I want to have covered turrets which is why I am curious about the zerostop with covers.

+1 on NightFoce you'll never be sorry.

Re: scope for ar-15

I am leaning towards the nightforce a little more because I have been pleased with them on my other rifles. The reticle is what I am still thinking about.

The rifle is only used to punch paper for practice and for wolf hunting in the winter where the environmental factors are pretty consistent.....real cold. For this reason I am leaning towards the low velocity reticle. For initial ranging I use a rangefinder. With this rifle I have never shot past 400yards on an animal and multiple shots can be taken without much adjustment.

Re: scope for ar-15

I have a pair of them, 1x4 with the FC-2 reticle and a 2.5x10x32 with the LV reticle, love both of them, 3 gun with the 1x4, and double duty with the 2.5x10, hunting/3gun (308)

Re: scope for ar-15

I have two 2.5-10x24 NF scopes.

Perfect size/weight and mag for an AR IMHO.

You won't be disappointed.

Only other scope I'd look at would be a x4 ACOG (had one, sold it, immediately regretted it!) but it would probably not suit your usage?
