Well, after a little investigating and some suggestions from forum members, I think I've narrowed my search down for Optics. I would like any and all feedback or opinions on these following choices. I have never spent $500 plus dollars on optics and I would like to make the right choice the first time.

1. Vortex Viper FFP 4-16x50 $820
2. Burris 4-16x44 Matte $519
3. Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5-16x42 $628
4. Leupold VX3 4.5-14x40 $679

I will be placing one of these optics on a Savage FP .308. I will be using this rifle for varmint and possible larger game hunting in the future. I also would like to do some target shooting from 200 to 700 yards. I'm a little new to the long range shooting thing and I'm sorry for all of the noob questions. Thanks

Re: Scope for my Savage FP .308

You doing more target (paper punching) or more hunting? Either way you can do both with a tactical scope. If you're going to be doing the target thing than look for a Mil/Mil FFP. I recenlty purchased a 3-12 Bushnell Elite 4200 Mil/Mil FFP. For the money ($600+) it's a great scope. Busnell is making some very nice glass and their tactical line of scopes are quite good for the money. The Vortex Viper PST FFP in the Mil/Mil config would do nicely. Vortex has a stellar reputation for customer service, and they make a very nice optic. I have a Vortex Razor 5-20 and it's as good or better than my Night Force. The Weaver Tactical 3-15 FFP Mil/Mil is a decent looking optic as well and it got some very good reviews in terms of optical clarity. Don't forget the Super Sniper line from SWFA. The 3-9 FFP Mil/Mil or the 10XHD Mil/Mil. I got to spend some time behind both and I was very impressed with the 10XHD. The glass was outstanding and the scope was built like a brick shit house.

Im not a fan of Burris or Leupold. I think they have lost touch with their customers and are living on their names (esp. Leupold). I have Leupolds and I have one Burris and while I like them for a hunting rifle neither company seems to "get it" in the tactical field. One nice thing is that there are a bunch of choices right now and they all seem to have features that cost thousands of dollars just a few years ago.

Thanks for the input about Leupold. I've heard rave reviews from military personnel who have used them on the field but if their customer service is weak, I think I will steer towards the Vortex or the Bushnell Elite series. I will be doing more target shooting than hunting with the rifle. It would also be nice to have a scope that would work well under the SHTF scenario if it was ever to happen? I really appreciate your opinion, its sounds like you've had a lot of trial and error experience in this field!

Re: Scope for my Savage FP .308

If you are looking at spending 1K on glass, or even close to it, you need to look at the new SWFA SS 5-20x50 FFP scope that is on the group buy right now. Just sayin....

Re: Scope for my Savage FP .308

Keep an eye on the Group Buy for the SWFA 5-20X50 in this forum. The price will probably be $999.95 by tomorrow or the next day at the most. They are really good folks to deal with and their scopes are a quality piece of glass.

Re: Scope for my Savage FP .308

If you were looking to spend $900 on ANY for of glass, you seriously need to look at the group buy. This scope will be at $1,000 very soon. The features and quality of the BA HD glass is outstanding!!

Check out the reviews and pictures, and save up that other $100. You will thank us later!!
