Got me a Sako Finnfire Varmint 22 and i need a scope for it.

I need a scope for longrange practice. Mildot or MLR reticle. And if possible metric knobs. I know Falcon have scope like that but who else? Any ideas? Cant afford a Zeiss at the moment

Re: Scope for new 22?

Hi Sweede,

When you say long range are you talking long range for .22LR cartriage which would be 200m maybe 300m yes? So for shooting paper you would likely do better with a SFP scope with moderately high magnification. Are you after a fixed power or variable? Price range?

If you have other rifles what kind of adjustments and reticles (mil/mil, MOA/mil, MOA/MOA respectively) are on your other scopes? If your new Sako is for practice/training you probably would be better off mounting a scope that matches your other scopes adjustments and reticles. This way what you learn with the Sako will carry over directly to your other long arms. I like shooting .22LR both for the trigger time and flat out fun of shooting them.

Re: Scope for new 22?

Was thinking about that range, 2-300 meters. Long enough for a 22

I got a Zeiss 6-24 mounted on a Rem 700, caliber is 260 Rem. Mildot with metric knobs, 1/2 cm clicks. So i figure i should try to get something like that on the 22 scope. Only one i found so far is Falcon that´s in my price range. Do you know any others?

Re: Scope for new 22?

Take a look at the Burris line. Lots of options in the higher magnification area. Many price points based on quality and features. I have a few of their Signature Line scopes and have been very please. I think they are the best kept secret in the business.

Swede,

You might want to hang back and wait for the new Falcon 5.5-25x56FFP scopes as they will be reasonbly priced espeically considering all of the features they have. I have a prototype of the new Falcon 5.5-25x56FFp with a ML16 reticle but they will also be available with an enhanced mildot reticle when released. These are very nice, solidly built scopes with very clear glass and after I replaced the O-rings under the new style adjustment knobs it has easily felt and heard 0.1 milrad clicks for both elevation and windage. The reticle at 25x is not too thick and for 200-300m should offer a reasonably good sight picture. I just got mine mounted on my spiffy new 10/22T with a Tactical Solutions 15MOA picatinny rail with Seekins 30mm high rings and it just clears the barrel without a Buttler Creek objective cover. I hope to go shoot it this weekend.

But thank´s anyway. Burris had some nice scopes but they are not mil.

Been offered a good deal on this scope: http://www.valdada.com/product/b82024e1-4234-4464-99ac-97e033c4c595.aspx

Cant find if it´s has moa or mil turrets. What do you think of it? </div></div>

Swede,

For IOR kind of money buy an IOR or Leupold scope. But for more budget friendly scopes I highly recommend looking at the Falcon scopes which while not in the same league optically edge to edge as IOR's glass or even Leupold glass still very good by most any standard out to 95% of the visible field.

Falcon has as newer version of their 4.5-18x56 scopes coming out that promise significant improvement over their first generation of 4.5-18x56 scopes. Improved optics (which were pretty good already) one piece tube and the new style adjustment knobs as first seen on the 5.5-25x56FFP are what I've heard. The 4.5-18x56 are second focal plane reticle scopes so the reticle stadia stay fine for target shooting. This might be a good way to go for you if you don't want a first focal plane scope like the 4-14x44 or 5.5-25x56 scopes.

Re: Scope for new 22?

Swedeshooter,

give this outfit a look Hawke Sport Optics

I have one of their scopes on my 10/22 and find it to be quite nice, with a 100 yd zero I can shoot to 300 without changing my dope. their scopes are also programmable with their free software.

+1 on this scope for the best bang for your buck.

Swede- since you don't want a 24x you might consider the little brother to this scope, the 2.5-10x42 with Mil-Dot

Target turrets in 1/4 MOA, unfortunately not metric though

Nice clear optics, holds POI in the 2 that I've used, works very nicely for me. Very affordable at 65 bucks or so in the US.

I like the Nikon optic very much, but I was concerned with the total elevation on this particular scope. If I remember correctly, it has a total of like 50 MOA (I can be wrong). Afraid that I may run out of MOA for longer distances. How far are you able to shoot your 22 LR with this scope?

Re: Scope for new 22?

I'm surprised no one mentioned the Mueller Tac. Lots of folks at rimfirecentral.com have good luck with them. linky

However, for a classy gun like that Sako, I'd get this classy 4x fixed Zeiss from EuroOptic. Plex reticle, no AO, but this one is adjusted for 50 yds. 75 MOA adjustment. Only EuroOptic seems to have the 50-yd. Zeiss in stock.

Re: Scope for new 22?

Dude,

I just went and shot from 50yds to 200yds using a Sightron SI 3-9 SFP Mildot. Thats a $120 optic ok.

Run a 150yd ZERO and 50yds is -4.0 Mil, 200yds +2.9 Mil

All is done with no dialing, just set ZERO and hold that sucker.

If you run a 50yd ZERO come up 17 MOA and now you are on at 150yds.

Its that simple.

do you know how much available travel is in the 2.5-10x42 tasco? I've been considering one of these until I can pick up a Buckmaster.
</div></div>

I don't remember offhand but I think it was about 7.5 minutes per turn and about 8 or 9 turns.

Mine is shimmed to a 50 yard zero and 3 minutes from the bottom. With a hold over I should be able to reach to 400 with it.

Re: Scope for new 22?

Burris scopes are hard to beat. I have some that I like better than my Luepolds. You pay for what you get. Burris definately is a good line to look at and thier customer service is great and so is Luepolds.

So what happened? I've been shooting with a prototype Falcon 5.5-25x56FFP on my 10/22T for a while now and it works fantastic! With a Tactical Solutions 15MOA picatinny base I could dial more than any practical elevation for a standard velocity .22LR with room to spare. But the TacSol base is too short for the largish Falcon 5.5-25x56FFP scope and I could not comfortably cheek the 10/22T with a proper sight picture because I could not move the scope far enough forward in the Seekins rings. So I installed a EGW 20MOA picatinny rail and moved the rings and scope forward 1 1/2" so I could see where I was shooting better. With a near stock 10/22T I can reliably hit the 300 yard steel but the last time I was at the local range it was too windy to go past 200-300 yards.
