i am thinking about scopeing an AK,maybe an AR,in the "scout" or on hand guard position instead of in the flat top or side rail position. i have NO experience in this area and am seeking input: experiences,opinions,ideas. i know that a lot of red dots are 0 mag so position is no issue. which products laser/red dot,scout scopes have worked best in this setting? budget is an issue-say $300ish. thanks.

You said scope, then mention red dots etc. My experience with red dots is get the best one you can afford. I have never got a inexpensive one to hold zero. My eotech has held up well so far. Hope this helps

I don't think there is a good reason to put a scope far forward on an ar platform, I can almost see doing it on an AK because you can get a quad rail forend for on and it would probably be a better mounting option the most AK scope mounts. As to a decent scout scope I'd look at some of leupold's long eye relief scopes to keep you under your budget.

Try running a search of the Hide using the link in my sig line below on "scout scopes" or something to that end. This topic has been covered pretty thoroughly in the past (albeit primarily for scout type bolt action rifles but the theory/scopes are the same).
As for red-dot or holosight type optics...generally speaking eye relief is not critical. The above thoughts re: cost are generally accurate. You can go cheap, but you'll likely end up having to go cheap multiple times to replace substandard red dots. On a budget, the Vortex red dots/holosights are nice, as are the Burris FastFire models. If you have the coin, the Aimpoint Micro T1 units are the cat's meow!

I had an Aimpoint on a Ruger GSS. It worked very well.
I also put a Leupold Scout scope on it. I found difficult to use. A friend of mine shot it and had no problem, but I had a hell of a time seeing anything.
I kept the Aimpoint on it until I sold it.
I've also mounted EOTech's in a forward position on an AR and it worked very well in that position too.
