Is this more of a personal preference? What also confuses me is that the levels on the rail mounted versions are on the left side of the rifle and the scope mounted ones are on the right? I would think as a right hand shooter that the level being on the left side would be easier since having your left eye open you can look at the level whereas if the level was on the right side of the scope you would have to adjust your face slightly to look at the level on the right? All inputs appreciated.

Re: Scope level; Scope or rail mounted?

I've tried both and actually have both rail and scope versions mounted on my gun but I was taking my scope off and on adjusting a gantry mount and that let me get the scope back on straight again easier each time.

I think the rail mounted version sticking out the left side is much easier for me to see and is at nearly the same level as the scope, a quick glance to the side and no head movement needed to look thru the scope again.

The one mounted on top of the scope I have to raise my head slightly each time to check it but since I don't have to worry about cheek weld or head placement it's not a big deal but it's just an extra movement and readjustment you'd have to worry about using that version.

Just my preference so far

Alpha,

Base mounted levels on the left side and scope mounted levels on the right. NO, both types can go on either side, like USO's offerings or on top like the Mounting Sloutions offerings. There is also a integral rear ring level, ala Nightforce (and others), which uses your rear ring and goes on top.

See the Midway page below, for a example:

Re: Scope level; Scope or rail mounted?

Thanks for the inputs. What do you guys think about this one by Horus. To get a level and an angle indicator for $70 is not bad. I know just a cosine/angle indicator from NF or USO is a lot more than that. It shows that it can also be mounted to the scope or the base.

Here is another from Midway: B Square

I got mine on sale for around $10. Does the job well, although I'm sure it's not as rugged as the USO.
