Rifle Scopes Scope Mount for 338 LM

Help please? I am building a 338 LM and intend on mounting a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP on it. I understand the scope has a max of 65 MOA in adjustment; for this range of rifle what rail and rings would you suggest?

Thats about 19 mils of adjustment, assuming your optics were mechanicaly centered when zeroed (which they rarely are) 65 MOA and a 0 cant base would roughly get you to around 1500-1550 depending on load of course. A 20 MOA base would get you to around 1800-1850, so a 40MOA would be what you want to get to 2K and have some windage adjustment. I am using basic load data based off a 300 SMK at 2760 fps.

I put a 20 moa base on mine with same scope capacity and then changed the base to 45 moa later as 20 was insufficient.

What base and rings did you use. On my 308 I bought NightForce base and rings and the rings had to be lapped a great deal to line up. I was a little disappointed in their rings. Thanks for your help. By the way; how far have you shot with your rifle?

Most often when rings require lapping it is due to the action torquing the base. I wouldnt automatically fault NF for quality issues.

How far are you planning to shoot the rifle? If going for maximum distance, a 40 MOA or so base as has been suggested above is what you need.

Keep in mind, however, you won't be able to get a 100 yd zero with that scope. So if you want to be able to zero at closer ranges and you're not going to be shooting it quite that far, I'd suggest a 20 MOA for that scope for all around use.

Or you could install a 20 MOA base, and use Burris 30mm Signature Zee rings...those inserts allow you another 10 and 20 MOA adjustments.

Mount the scope with the "0" inserts on the 20 MOA rail, then see where you end up at the range. Change the inserts to get what you want after that.
