I just got my Nikon Monarch 3-12x42SF and this thing has a huge ocular lens in the rear mounted on a R700 Varmint 308, basically the same barrel profile as a 700P, on a McMillan HTG forest camo stock.

She's a heavy bitch all right.

The optic sits so low to the barrel that I don't have enough room to mount a Butler Creek on the front. The kicker is the rear. The bolt is a regular R700 bolt with no tactical knob, and when I open the bolt and bring it back, it's less than a millimeter from the rear section of the scope. So much that I can't put any flip-ups on the rear or the bolt knob will knock it off.

It's on a 1-pc M40A1 type 20moa canted base with Leupold dual dovetail LOW rings.

I think I'm gonna have to up these rings to medium...

What do you guys think?

Re: Scope mounted too low?

I recently had the same problem and moved up to the next size ring, which was 0.125 higher. Now the scope and caps fit nicely. At first I tried grinding away a BC cap but so much material came off that it didn't close very well any more.

Re: Scope mounted too low?

Yeah, the fuckin bolt is definitely rubbing the rear portion of the scope when pulled up. I just hope Loopy medium rings are enough as the cheek weld is pretty sweet where it is.

Man, this is a heavy motherfucker. Hope I can lug it around to my hunting spots come Whitetail season!

Edit: yeah both Nikon flip-ups can be mounted but the front rubs the barrel a bit. But the back prevents the bolt from being pulled all the way back it's that tight. If I wasn't careful, the bolt would scratch the rear lens tube when ejecting a casing.

TAB slings look pretty nice. Not sure if they're hunting appropriate or not.

No regulation in PA on slings LOL. I just don't know how silent it would be with all those big plastic clips on it banging off rocks and the tree stand.

I thought maybe the Nikon flip-ups were just too big as the scope sits nicely, but after my first post I discovered that the bolt is rubbing the scope, so that sealed the deal for me LOL.

If you're running flush cups, it's a non-issue, especially when it's on your back. The fastex buckles are quite silent, as in, not louds. I'd think the sound of twigs and old leaves, crunching under your feet, would be more of a signature than a sling.

Re: Scope mounted too low?

This is starting to piss me off.

I went to Cabela's tonight and got a set of medium Leupold Dual Dovetail rings since the low's were too short.

Now the scope doesn't rest on the barrel and the bolt clears the rear section, however there's still very little room between the bolt and the scope. I do not think I'll be able to install a Butler Creek flip-up.

What do you guys think? Should I just go for the high rings? The height feels good right now.

Re: Scope mounted too low?

Friend has the same setup and same problem. He cant use scope cover around the ocular lense, it pop off all the time. Additionally, he has fat fingers, finds it hard to manipulate the bolt.

Go higher and add more cheek hight.

Re: Scope mounted too low?

By the looks of your pic you should have no problem mounting BC caps. If you mount them with the thumb release in the lower right so that the cover flips up, which is the "correct" way according to the BC packaging, you may have difficulties. If you look at a lot of the pics posted here, most people don't have there BC's installed so that the caps flip up, the make them flip to the side. If you set them up so your caps flip to the left, the thumb release will be on top, which will give you plenty of clearance for the bolt, allow you to use the caps, and keep your cheek weld as low as possible. Win, win, win.
