What is the most straightforward way to mount the scope and have the reticle plump/level in relation to the bore? I am sure this has already been addressed here, would someone link the best thread or point me in the right direction.
The Wheeler or feeler gauges or wedges or playing cards is a one part of the exercise. It only ensures that the bottom of your scope base is level with your rail. You're assuming that your reticle is assembled correctly and you're assuming that you have no natural cant when you shoulder the rifle.
Once you use the Wheeler or any other similar method, you need to ensure your reticle is plumb to the fall of gravity and that can't be done without a plumb line or other similar type of test.

iMO you are asking the wrong question... because having the scope square and plumb to the bore does not really matter that much. The better question to ask is "How can I set up my gun so that when I shoot, my position is consistent and my scope is always level to gravity?".
After reading the links and doing further research I have a better understanding. I used a plumb to set my vortex bubble level. This will be my reference before taking the shot that my reticle is plumb to the fall of gravity.
