Rifle Scopes Scope question??

I’ve been shooting a AO TMR in 6.5 for a while, I have a NF 7-35 ATACR on it . I’m comfortable with it. I recently acquired a JP gas gun. I’m not a big gas gun guy, but got a deal on it. It’s a CTR-02 in 223 Wylde. I have a Vudu in 5-25 ( the little short one) I’m concerned that 5 may not be a low enough power for the close targets should
I decide to run a gas gun match.. Thoughts, advice? I’m ok with buying another ATACR if needed, but also have several other items to buy if I can get away with a 5-25. Thanks for all the help.

I shoot squirrels inside 50 yards regularly on 9x with my .17HMR because it’s a very beat up Leupold that won’t hold zero if I change the mag setting, and that’s where it’s zeroed right now. I need to get it fixed but not sure if Leupold will warranty it, there’s a hole in the scope tube from a previous owner. It’s killed a lot of game.

I have a Weaver K4 on my 30-06 Mauser hunting rifle, and it’s going elk hunting in Idaho this year.

Have a 6.5-20 on my 308 right now, don’t have any problems.

5x for bottom end isn’t a problem, not in my opinion. I wouldn’t feel handicapped with a fixed 10x, even up close. Not even for movers. Trigger time is king, and can overcome most issues.

The point I’m getting at, is that critters move a lot more than steel or paper, and I don’t find 4-9x to be a hindrance, even inside 50 yards on moving targets. Run with what you’ve got is my vote.

I'm sure the NF 1-8 ATACR would be great on your CTR02. but if you don't want to spend too much this Burris is pretty nice. I have it on my CTR02. You can get it for a really nice price from Doug.

When you say "gas gun match", are you talking about something like the PRS Gas Gun series? If that is the case, then your 5-25x50 Vudu should work just fine. If you are compelled to add some close range capability, you can always add an offset red dot.

On the other hand, if you are talking about something like the 3-gun type competition, then a low range variable like the Burris XTR II linked above or something along those lines is a good option. There are plenty of options in the $1000 to $1200 range that are very good.

Ilya beat me to it. The gas gun match type is the deciding factor.

If we are talking 3 Gun or a similar dynamic on the clock match scenario, it's most likely 5x is too much magnification. Leaving you with two options.

An offset red dot, which works well on targets 70 yards and in, roughly. It's a bit top heavy with that much optic, and not exactly ideal, but it will work. Or something along the lines of the 1-8 suggested above. I have the Burris XTR II's on a pair of 3 Gun rifles. It's an excellent optic for the task. And I've dialed and hit 2 moa targets at 920 yards with it.

Thanks for the replies and sorry for the delay in response! I am planning on shooting the gas gun PRS style match, not the 3 gun style. I was a little concerned about 5 being too much magnification at closer targets. ( I’m not sure what they start at) I’ll start out with the the VUDU, I’m spending some $$ on a night vision set up to shoot coyotes with, so that will help! Thanks to you all! I would put on offset red dot on it then.

I set up a 6.5 Creedmoor gasser with an offset red dot for the PRS Gas Gun series and it worked great.

Besides curve-ball stages to test your scope-over bore or whatever, most PRS style matches I've been to have their closest targets around 150-175yd.

I will parrot what has been said above, from experience, the offset red dot OR a RMR (which is crazy light) is a solid choice.
When I went to the Dual Role Carbine course put on by Jack Leuba (Failure2stop) we shot from contact/CQB out to 850yds with our gassers. Almost everyone not running a LPVO was using an offset dot of some flavor. They can be super fast if you train them. Very, very effective to 100yds, where your scope takes over.
