I bought a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .308 as a base for a precision build. The intended usage is hitting steel out to 800 yards. I figure the next step is glass. I'm on a budget and am looking for a good scope for around $1K. 4-14 or so power range, FFP would be nice, I'm open to reticle suggestions. I've looked at Leupold Mark 4, Vortex Viper and Trijicon Accupoint. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I like the Weaver EDMR in this price range (if you can find one in stock). Had a Trijicon 5-20 Accupoint with mildot reticle, it was way too thick for my use. You may want to look for a used SS HD5-20, I've seen them just over $1K for the non-illuminated version. If you like the PST, call SportOptics, they have good prices for Hide members.
Thanks for the help. I think I'm going to go with the Vortex. I like the idea of having a first focal plane scope for range estimation. I figure it'll be a good start point to putting rounds downrange and start practicing.
So I buy Nightforce from now on.... I have several friends that used them in the Service and that is all they run. Also, when someone like Brandon Webb who was the sniper course manager at the Navy SEAL sniper school gets out and has a Nightforce on his own 300 that says something to me. But I hope whatever you go with it works for you.
Another vote for the Weaver. Had one, dead nuts tracking, tough build and great glass for the money as mentioned in another thread. I always looked at mine as a poor man's premeir and that's not supposed to be a knock to it or the owner. Now the Gen-2 MD isn't bad but put a EBR or USO Gap type reticle in it would be awesome for the asking price.
i had posted something similar and everyone told me to atleast get a mil/mil or moa/moa retical turret combination its just easier and i agree. i think the accupoint is mil/ moa so that is really your prefrence. if you hace access to either scope id say look through it and compare clearity... reason being is that in my case i some times see better with the so called lower quality glass than the high end stuff i just think its my eyes. im personaly trying to get the pst cuz its available localy and i have the customer support i need. the night force is great but it doesnt fit my budget, if my budget allows it i probably either get an nxs or the vortex hd. i guess just really ask you self what are you goin to use it for and does it fit shooting needs. my wife told me ......yes my wife... she said why are you going to buy something that your are not going to be happy with? so yeah i think im going to save a bit more and get what i really want.....
My Rem 700 SPS-Varmint in .308 Win is an ongoing project. It is an excellent shooter. I recently put a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP MOA/MOA on the rifle, using my existing Leupy STD bases and switching to STD 30mm Medium Rings. The scope mounts nice and low in this set-up. I have the action glass-bedded in a B&C A5 stock so cheek-piece adjustment is no problem. I believe I should have no problem out to roughly 800 yards. For longer distance, I will switch to a 20 MOA base and appropriate rings.
As to budget, you should be able to get the scope for $900-950 and the base/ring setup I have for roughly $60. It's not a high end set-up but it works well.

Good choice going vortex I have loved everything i have gotten from them. Never had to use there customer service but everything i hear sounds almost to good to believe.
