Scout scope on an M1A Socom ??

I am considering putting a light scout scope on my M1A Socom.

Burris makes two scout scopes ... One is a fixed 2.75 power and weighs only 7 ounces ... The other is 2-7x32 and weighs 13 ounces

I am leaning toward the lighter fixed power scope ... would like to keep the rifle lighter

I mainly just use the rifle for fun target shooting out to 200 yards ... Would possibly use to hunt

Does anyone have a scout scope on their M1A ?

I just put a HiLux 2.7 LER on a Spanish M43 8mm bolt gun. I also tried a red dot. Between the two, prefer the red dot with a fine 2MOA dot. With this scope, past 5x is not so great. The fixed 2.75 might be the better option.

If your eyesight is good enough consider a red dot if not going to shoot past 200 yards.

If you are talking about the forward mount that is attached to the barrel it will affect accuracy. I tried it 1 day then ordered a standard receiver mount. A lightweight red dot produced 1.5 MOA with Mk319 ammo, a 2-7x scope produced 3MOA+

Yes ... I would mount the scope on the forward rail.

3moa+ is discouraging.

Was the red dot on the forward rail, when it shot 1.5 moa? That seems decent for an M1A

My SOCOM with a Vortex red dot . I have a Gen 4 side mount with a 2x10x42 Nikon Monarch Scope now . I did like the Vortex & it was fast to bring on target , but wanted to test different set ups & the Scope will probably stay for now , I just don't like Scope mounts bolted to the Barrel , bad place to mount anything Optic related IMO.

There are a few handguards for the M1A which free float the barrel. I believe M14.ca makes one, as well as Fulton Armory. Also Ultimak.

I use a very old Leupold M8-2x EER scope or ''extended Eye rel Scope'' and it works awsome. It only cost 170$. I made sure that the factory rail was leveled to my gun and the scope was leveled when I mounted it. I zeroed at 50 yards and then went to the 200 yd range and put up an elk target. I got good kill shots with it shooting off my assult pack. This is my only scout rifle setup and the first one I've tried and I love it.

Red dot was on forward rail, it was a very light Primary Arms 25mm. 2x7 was also light for a scope but probably 4x heavier than the RD.

forget the barrel mount . Get a sadlak or an arms 18 mount . a nice 1x8 optic would be my suggestion . alot of people remove the scope mount thats attached to the barrel .

Even with the SAGE or Vltor cluster rails youll get issues with the cantilever or the forward rail for mounting.

Get yourself a Sadlak which is one of the best for the M1A and go with whatever youd like in the LPVO range (1-6/1-8) and call it a day.

Well ... you all are making me rethink this.

A Sadlak with a light Leupold 1-4 would not be that much heavier ... Plus the weight would be further back

I have the Burris 2.75x fixed on my Scout. It has held up great and is a very solid optic. It's on the barrel mount.

My rifle in that setup shoots around 2 moa with surplus Radway Green or Lake City ammo. I've shot and hit steel targets out to 500 yards consistently once I figured out the holdovers.

For the purpose I built that rifle for it does the job very well.

If you choose to get a receiver mount, I like the ARMS 18. I've had the Sadlak and SEI mounts and prefer the ARMS. If you want easy on and off get the Bassett Machine mount.
