im pretty new to reloading and have been using some factory seconds 175smk's for testing/load developement and have been getting fair results. started checking base to ogive the other day and found they run up to almost .040" difference so i sorted them and weighed them to find weights variation was less of a factor. anyway, my question is why does a seating die push the bullet from the point and not the ogive so that seating to lands would be repeatable? am i missing something because it seems with so much base to ogive variations that seating any other way varies the "seat to the lands" dimension?

Re: seating and bullet dimensions

Most die makers actually use a "cup" for seating. But it doesn't make it all the way to the actual ogive. They make it just big enough that it doesn't disfigure the nose of the bullet too bad. Again, MOST companies will alter one for you if you contact them. RCBS makes different ones you can buy. I drill and lap my own.

If you have the die set for any roll crimp at all it will make a mark on the bullet where the cup touches. The heavier the crimp the heavier the mark will be.
