Forestry industry is volatile as ever and am looking to start my own business buying/selling timber. Been through layoffs with westvaco, plumb creek, AWP and others as they go under and getting tired of it.

Need some start up cash, have a farm with heavy amounts of White Oak thinking of coppice cutting with reserves from 110 ba per acre (mixed White, Chestnut oak)- to 20 BA per acre, then selling the farm or prescribed burning it within 3 years to kill a lot of the non-oaks then placing it into a carbon sequestration easement lasting about 80 years ( I can thin about 20 BA per acre as needed). Or selling some guns (will be listed on gun broker).

Purchasing timber on public land will be not be possible for at least 2-3 years depending on politics. So I would need cash upfront and have to deal with private landowners. A few logging outfits I have worked with in the past would be willing to wheel and deal with me. Would also be working on being a consultant on the side.

Thoughts?

I have no advice, but I like your moxie....it reads like Trump is going to help the industry out, but like you say that is 24 months out.
I don't know, my speculation is telling me dealing with the public unless you are a big fish might be out for the forseable future. They are not going to be setting up small sales, that I could afford to work with for a while. They do most of the work I would be doing themselves so whoring myself out to a larger company would be out of the question. I could cruise it for them to make a bid on the stand but that fee may or may not be worthwhile.

Fed sales will be under a lot more scrutiny by environmentalist organizations anyways. The previous administrations obsession with old growth stopping global warming and the current admin's not redefining is not boding well in my mind. The environmentalists organizations smell blood and know that FS barely has timber markers let alone enough staff to delineate old growth stands. Some of the organizations still have enough money to hire out their own investigations and litigate when they have a "caught ya" moment. They've been perusing the SAF licensee list and sending emails. That's my current gut feeling after getting offers to be added to their consultant lists.

Buying from farmer bob I dont have to worry about that, just follow the State BMP's, make sure my logger follows them as well, and don't bite off more than I can chew/be careful to buy what the mills want/willing to work with.
I'd like to do this part time anyways as a supplement during the summers if I go back to teaching.
