Tried to use google search but didn't see anything on this.

My son 22, traded a used glock at the south florida fairgrounds gun show for a used savage rifle. About 8 months later I get a call at 6:am. He's an armed security guard getting off a night shift. His mother called him and said the FBI was at the house wanting to speak with him.
Apparently they found the glock laying on the chest of a dead guy in Nicaragua, Traced the serial number back to my son. Of course he had no paperwork even thou he should have. ( It was a dealer) Private trade I guess.
After questioning him on if he had ever been to Nicaragua, etc They told him not to worry and if they needed to get back with him they would. So far so good.
Of course He has never been there but was still freaked out & my Ex say's it's all my fault. I should have never gotten him into shooting etc etc.

Leads me to my question: What is the proper way.
How do you guy's who sell a rifle or handgun on the hide do it in a way so it's safe for both sides. Is there always paperwork involved?
I did read where some send it to a FFL. But does that mean you have to have the same back round check's & all just like if you were buying new from a store? Just curious because I am thinking of eventually putting a few up for sale on here and would like to know the procedure.
Thanks for any info on this.

So, the FBI is investigating crimes in Nicaragua now, too? Not busy enough doing the homeland stuff, they're 'contracting out' now too?

Re: Selling firearms question?

the only way is not to sell person to person, or go to you local gun dealer that will do a background check for you but some wont becouse they want the profit of you selling gun to them, then they sell to guy, but i have a local ffl and if i sell locally he will do the background check for me it is more than he charges if he sells the gun, but he still has to catalog the gun in to invitory but he has things he has to do buy law and it cost me but he got bills to pay too. i make the buyer pay if not i dont sale. that way i dont have to worrie about selling to felon and so on. not saying all ffl's are money hungry but its a bissness

He didn't do anything wrong and he does not have to have any paperwork from the dealer or a private individual when he sells or trades a firearm.

Obviously it was a dealer he traded it to that is how they were able to do a reverse search and track him down.

I sell very few of my guns because I used to worry about things like this but am eventually going to liquidate my collection abd will just make a list of who I sell waht to and when, that way I can track where they went in case something happens, but private sales are usually a dead end on reverse searches.

Re: Selling firearms question?

I would only sell to you if you have a chl or class three weapons. A simple handwritten bill of sale would be a good idea for your records. I've also done FTF in parking lots, I also get a Tag # when they drive away.

He already did it the proper way. It's legal to sell a firearm privately.
