Buddy of mine just got a SAKO TRG in .338 Lapua. What does he need on top of the receiver to mount up a Nightforce 5.5x22 50mm? Is the "SAKO" base the only option? He wants a 20 degree base so he can shoot long.

I use a Near 25moa 6 screw 5 lug base with his 34mm Alphamount on my TRG42 and it is super double plus extra excellent!

I agree w/ everyone else I use a Near on mine and also a Near break. I could not be happier with the customer service and the products. Tell your friend if he has any doubts about Near b/c of being in Canada or the price he will not after talking to Richard and the uppon reciveing the products.

I went with the Sako 3 ring tactical mount since was included with the rifle. Worked well so far, has 30moa offset and the front hook for the mirage strap (the strap vibrated too much in the 30mph cross winds at Casper Wy a few weeks ago and is currently lost in the boxes of empties and equipment). The medium ring is about correct for the 56mm Nightforce 5.5x22 (looked a little high at first, but with the sunshade on, the Nightforce lens caps just fit).
If had to do from the ground up instead of getting a deal from friends (long story but a nnib TRG42 with Nightforce 5.5x22 by 56 showed up at no cost to even out a long term trade), would/did look at the Near if only to get away from the plastic scope inserts supplied with the 30mm Sako mount (work fine now but always wonder about ten years from now).

, but from what I have heard it should be excellent.
The Finnish Army use it on their sniper-rifles, so I believe it is well tested.
Don´t understand why so many wants to put a rail on their guns when they don´t have to.
Near is probably verry god stuff, but when you put that rail on your gun there is one more thing that can get loose. Read Zak Smiths article where he compare AI vs TRG.
I think it is a god idea to minimize any potential problems in a gun like TRG 338 LM, that is being known for being hard on scopes and mounts .

Yes the Sako factory 3-ring mount is very good.
Running a rail enables the use of a 35mm scope body if the user wishes to.
It also makes the TRG receiver a "universal" set up where anyone can simply bolt on a scope mounted in rings to the rail.
Plus the Near rail specifically is very low profile and so solid it needs to be seated to the receiver by using the bolts that it comes with to pull the recoil lugs into the lug recess on top of the TRG receiver. By far THE best OPTION to using the factory Sako 3-ring mount.

The sako 3-ring mount cost me $475 new back in 2004-ish. The Near set up with his 25moa base and 3-ring alpha mount cost me $518.
I dont think the Sako mount is too expensive. Also the optilock TRG mount has been known to "slip" on the 42s.

I'm a fan of the sako 3 ring setup myself because it's one unit and one less interface to go wrong.
NEAR makes great stuff, but it's still just putting on a rail and then a clamp rings scope setup. Now if you want to use one scope on multiple rifles, or you are using a 35mm scope etc. it's great or if you need more adjustability options forward and backward than you can get with the sako maybe it's a great option. Everyone complains about the cost of the sako mounts in insane but NEAR rail/alpha ends up being even more $.
If I just wanted a rail I'd go NEAR all the way, but between the NEAR alpha/rail combo and the sako 3 ring setup I prefer the sako. But that's why lots of companies make lots of different quality products.

I have the 3-ring SAKO ring/mount set up. It is well-designed, has repeatable return to zero (within 0.5 MOA), keeps the scope a tad lower (than a picatinny type rail added on top). The only concern, is to ensure that the base (with its lug/"stop") is flush with the receiver before you tighten down the bolts. Don't ask why I know this...
I have the 3-ring SAKO ring/mount set up. It is well-designed, has repeatable return to zero (within 0.5 MOA), keeps the scope a tad lower (than a picatinny type rail added on top). From what I understand through Beretta USA (US Sako distributor)... No. I would have needed to buy the proper TRG 3-ring 34mm mount. The rings on the mount are able to be removed, but Beretta USA stated that the rings alone are not able to be ordered as it is considered one unit, which didn't make sense to me at all.
So I figured might as well call Near and get the nice stuff ordered. I sold the 30mm 3-ring mount on here for $300 shipped.
Believe me the Sako 3-ring mount is good to go. SAKO factory 3-ring OR NEAR, one of those two are the only way to fly.

Ok, I understand, but in the same time it sounds a bit strange to me.
Where I live, you buy the rings and bases separately, standard optiloc, but I believe they use the same rings in the 3-ring mount.
The only problem I can see is that you need to buy 4 rings but only need 3.
The 34 mm rings is 35,5 mm high and phosphatized.
I realy hope that I am right about this because that is what I plan to do when I upgrade my optics.
I am not questioning your choice about the Near mfg, many people talks good about it and it is always good when there is options.
