Severe fouling of AR-10A4F muzzle?

I just removed the FA from my AR-10 so I could install a new SAS muzzle brake for use with my new SAS suppressor. I was shocked to find a heavy layer of carbon built up from the crown and completely covering the muzzle. There's just under 200 rounds through this barrel. 20 rounds of Winchester factory hunting loads, 20 round of my hand loads and the remainder M80.

I took 2 hours of painstaking cleaning and very careful scraping to get it clean.

None of my other rifles or AR's have anything close to this - just common carbon soot. My cleaning routine is identical for all my firearms, so I don't suspect it.

Is the M80 ball that dirty? I'm wondering if any other AR-10 owner's have come cross this?

Do your other ARs have muzzle devices? It is very common for there to be lots of buildup around the muzzle/crown of a barrel with certain muzzle devices.

Yup, that's what I had on my AR-10. BTW - Really good pictures.

I have 3 other AR's and a Savage 10FLCP-K with muzzle devices and none of them have ever had the amount of build up my AR-10 experienced. When cleaning I always use a Q-tip soaked with bore cleaner and give the muzzle a good soaking and cleaning. It's looking like I may have missed this step when cleaning my AR-10.

Jpach - what process do you use to clean the muzzle/crown?

I've read that using a suppressor makes everything dirtier and does it much faster. I guess that's the price we pay for experimenting and having fun
