Hi guys,
It's been a many a moon since I've posted anything or been shooting for the matter.
So, I'm just gonna mainly be shooting for distance, and accuracy, just plinking targets. No hunting, no 3 gun competition.
I just wanna good scope for some long range shooting. 500+ yards
So, I just went ahead ordered a 2nd focal plane scope. Wouldnt the 2nd focal plane reticle be just as good as the 1st focal reticle for me, or maybe even better?
I guess I just wanna know if I screwed up or not. I can send the scope back if need be though.
Thanx for any help fellas.

Will you ever be shooting on a magnification other than what the SFP reticle is calibrated at?

SFP is almost never the right answer.

If you’re only ever going to just be plinking, it doesn’t matter.

I prefer ffp, but for your purposes, it doesn’t matter at all. Just know that if you’re using the reticle to hold for wind (or elevation), you will have different solutions at different magnification settings.

Get a reticle you like and shoot it.

Thank you sir. I really appreciate that.

Almost everyone owns a range finder, my SFP scopes I enjoy much more than my FFP I always use a range finder if I’m shooting much over 500 yards anyways. With all the nice range finders that are out which are way more accurate than trying to range with a scope the SFP are becoming more and more popular again, Nightforce is Even making there 7x35 atacr In SFP now that blew me away.

FFP vs SFP has almost literally NOTHING to do with ranging anymore.

I mean if we are talking hold over space most SFP scopes are accurate on the highest power only, which if your holding over your probably shooting along ways in which case you will be zoomed all the way out, FFP scopes are accurate on all powers but for me the first few powers are useless on the count of the cross hairs are so small you can’t even see the lines, that is really my biggest issue with FFP is zoomed all the way in the crosshairs are Huge and all the way down they are tiny.

Um......wut?

Probably should of used punctuation I guess lol. I reread that last post and it was hard for me to read as well, basically you are correct the SFP scopes are only accurate for hold over or ranging on one power which is usually all the way up. Where as FFP are accurate on all powers. But I use a range finder and I dial up I don’t hold over unless I’m out of dial.

Nice try. I‘m all out of energy for this for the week. ?

Uh, no joke. The guy does understand exactly how to use SFP and FFP scopes and their limitations. His written English may not be the best here, but I understood him perfectly.

I'm not one of those who shits on people who use SFP scopes. I have both kinds. I also have scopes with exposed mil turrets and mil reticles, I have scopes with MOA capped turrets and BDC reticles, and I have reflex sights with no reticle at all (just a dot). All of which were bought for a particular application on a particular rifle and I know how to use them all without confusion or hesitation.

One trick ponies aren't a good idea.

For the type of shooting he obviously does, he’s fairly correct.

For dynamic shooting that will require wind and elevation holds, he’s not in the ballpark. Unless someone wants to memorize a ton of different information for 2-3 or more magnification changes.

I have both FFP and SFP scopes and using my StrelokPro app and a range finder and kestrel on ether scope I always dial and have better results than hold over, am I missing something here lmao

Yes. Your shooting apparently affords you the time an opportunity to dial everything or know what your wind holds are at different magnifications.

Not everyone has that time and opportunity.

Here's where these SFP vs FFP threads go to shit. Right there ^

He never mentioned when one was better than the other. He only described how each one works and that one of them (SFP) works just fine for what he does.

Here's a newsflash for this forum: the kind of rifle shooting most people here do is alien to the majority of people who enjoy shooting rifles at long distances. And so are the equipment preferences.

I never said I don’t hold over it’s just normally I hold over if I’m completely out of dial up which I have done before and I hold over for wind sometimes to.
Having a range finder can make you just as dynamic of a shooter, lol doesn’t matter how you find the pot of gold all that matters is that you beat the leprechauns

No, the rangefinder doesn’t help wen you have 5 or more targets in switching winds at distances between 300 and 1k and you have 90seconds to shoot them.

And when you get to the day 800yd, you find the mirage is much worse there and you back your magnification down while on the optic. You have no idea where you are, 12x or 17x. You just know that you backed it down and the mirage is tolerable now.

The rangefinder has nothing to do with it, and you’ll run out of time dialing.

Again, your shooting situation/discipline is completely different. You’re speaking from your knowledge/experience base which doesn’t involve multiple target engagements with multiple wind zones in compressed times.

I never said one or the other was wrong I would just rather shoot my SFP scopes over my FFP scopes I have the knowledge to use both, I know how to hold over just as I know how to dial, I would just rather dial up

Thanks for the heads-up :)
