If you bought a rifle off the forum, a specific model that has very specific parts, and you didn’t ask if it was a stock rifle, and their ad doesn’t mention if it is stock or not, and the rifle shows up with all the good parts taken off, Would you consider that a shady business deal? For example, if you bought a Seekins Precision PH2 NRL which comes stock with a TriggerTech Diamond trigger, and it shows up and it’s not a Diamond trigger, would you have a problem with it?

Something like that should be disclosed by the seller, but as the buyer you should always ask questions. Were there pictures in the ad?

What trigger did you receive in place of the TT? What other good parts were missing?

Yes, false advertising. I would contact the guy make sure it was not an honest mistake. Then come to some agreement to make it right.

What was the trigger that was installed instead?

A seller should list exactly what is for sale. If certain components are shown, but not included, or explicitly excluded from the sale, that is deception. If I have 1965 Mustang for sale that has a built performance engine, but intend to install the stock engine for the sale, I'd better let it be known, before the buyer purchases.

Shadyness would be determined by how he answers the follow up email.

I've always tried to be 100% up front when I sell stuff, but with a few different projects I can see things getting forgotten about. Especially if it's something rarely used.

However if I emailed him and he said pound sand. Then yeah shady as fuck.

I've learned to always ask about what you're expecting - if it isn't listed. Not doing so is on you.

I've also learned that 50% of the sellers online will tiptoe around or misrepresent what they have to some extent. If they are missing the photo of an angle, ask for clarification before you commit. I've learned how to gunsmith S&W revolvers to a good extent because of my naiivete in years past.

Here's where I'd contact the seller and try to clarify what the agreement should have been. If they don't try to meet you mid-way, mark them down as someone you'll not piss on if they were on fire and then nurse your wounds as you learned a lesson.

I know some dudes love buying used, but man, buying used guns and used cameras/lenses over the internet are tricky for me. I think the 50% misrepresentation rate cited above might be higher.

Especially with Gunbroker. Gdamn that site sucks.

I like buying used stuff in person. But often it’s not possible with specialized gear.

On topic, yeah, barring factory-changed specs, that seems a little shady. For example, if I listed a pre-64 Model 70 Winchester and didn’t mention the trigger wasn’t stock…most people would just assume it was.

I reached out to the original owner, he seemed pretty cool about it, said he'd take $150 off the purchase price. Also found out that the original magazine was not included as well. I put 70% of this on me. I just assumed if someone was selling a PH2 NRL, it would come as a PH2 NRL would come and didn't ask enough questions.

Yeah....this ^^. Its been asked a half a dozen times already....WTF was the trigger that was installed?

Probably a TT field trigger. I know the PH2’s and elements come stock with TT field, guessing the seller probably swapped the field on a different rifle with the diamond on the NRL before selling.

Edit: I am not the seller, just guessing
