I finally got out to shoot my FAL with suppressor today since I got it cut down to 16" and had the mount put on so I can use my suppressor with it.
I set the gas port up initially so all the gas would hit the piston and shot the rifle with no suppressor and was happy that it functioned fine. I put about 20 rounds through it, and got positive ejection of the brass and no malfunctions. Next, I set the gas port up to vent off as much gas as possible. With the suppressor on it, I'm told that there will be too much gas and backpressure, so I did all I could to vent off everything I could.
We shot 60 more rounds through the rifle with the suppressor on it and all functioned fine. There was quite a bit of gas in the face and everything is black with carbon, but the gun appeared to function fine and we didn't notice any overabundance of gas. I didn't notice the bolt slamming into the rear of the receiver or any obvious signs of overpressure. I've got a rubber recoil buffer behind the bolt and although it was covered in carbon, it didn't look any worse for wear.
Overall, the suppressor cut down on recoil a bit, and noise quite a bit, but I wouldn't say it's hearing safe. Still fairly loud, not nearly as quiet as it is on my bolt rifle with 22" barrel.

There was definitely a lot of gas. You don't want to shoot it without eye protection. Also, since it was cold and humid, quite a bit of moisture accumulated quickly in the rifle and you'd get a wet blast of gas on your face with each shot. Nothing painful, but definitely unpleasant. I got a nice black mark on my nose where some of the gas was exiting the rear of the receiver.
