What speeds w/what bullet weights are you getting, what powder/loads?

A friends 6.5x47 sends 140's at 2675 with 21.75".

My last 6.5x47L had a 22" Brux that shot the 123 scenars at 2840 fps. I now have a 24" 6x47L that shoots the 105 Berger hybrids at 3165 fps. 6x47L is by far the better choice. For me at least.

22.7" Blaser R8 and an 18.5" Blaser K-95 in 6.5x55 (equal to the 6.5x47) I get 2900fps from the 22.7" with a 50gr load of VV 560 and a 130gr bullet. With the 18.5" barrel, 140gr Swift A-frames produce 2550fps with RL22. Not enough speed to open them up on Pronghorn.

Have you tried RL17?

The 6.5x55 and 6.5x47 aren't even CLOSE to being equals. Hell, the 6.5x55 won't even fit in a short action. I would take at least 75 FPS off of the above stated numbers to equate them to a 6.5x47

Here is a little comparison if you were deciding between the 6.5x47L or 6x47L.

From actual verified data. This is info taken from the same rifle but with different barrels. Please note that the 6.5x47L had a 22" brux and now I have a 24" brux for the 6x47L.


6.5x47L:
123 gr Lapua Scenar @ 2840 fps (actual bullet BC: .478)
1000 yard data:
Elevation required 29.9 MOA ~ energy at 544 ft lbs
Wind hold for 10 mph cross: 7.6 MOA

6x47L:
105 Berger Hybrid @ 3165 fps (actual bullet BC: .555)
1000 yard data:
Elevation required 21.2 MOA ~ energy at 751
Wind hold for 10 mph cross: 5.3 MOA


That is over 90 inches LESS drop on the 6 than the 6.5 with over 30% more energy and 40% less wind drift!

As a note, the Berger 105 hybrid is the first bullet that I have ever had to enter a higher BC than claimed to get my trajectory to match.



Here is a 5 shot 100 yard group that I shot while running some rounds over the Chrony. Believe it or not there are 4 rounds through the bottom hole.

Here are some groups that I shot when calibrating the rifle. Wind from 10 o-clock at 8-12 MPH

/= 300 yards
o= 500 yards
diamond = 800 yards measured 2.877"

I am super impressed with the change from 6.5 to 6.

Well I only have a couple hundred rounds through it at this time. Granted it has not been too hot around here but right now I have no pressure signs and my primer pockets are still tight (after 4 reloads). I have not had much velocity change with 4350 but I guess we will see this summer.

Please dont take my post wrong Im just trying to help. We all usually learn things the hard way.

I have been shooting the 6XC ALOT with 105 hybrids and H4350. With barrels that are in the 26-28 inch range keeping the bullet under 3100 is a smart idea.

I pushed the 105 at 3200 at the begining of this year in a 27 inch barrel at a pretty big PRS match. I was shooting better than I have ever shot. Towards the end of day one it started to rain. I instantly started blowing primers. it cost me several spots towards the top. I will never do that again!!

I know guys shooting the 105 hybrids in the 2850 range to 3100 range. THey will shoot bugholes if you have a good rifle.

A good test is to go to the range and wet your ammo with a bottle of water then shoot a group. See what happens

Great feedback - thanks guys.

Love both 6s and 6.5s, the 6.5 has better bore life, but you do get more speed w/a lighter bullet in the same case via 6, w/BC, and they work well no doubt. Understand you need more tube to get burn in a smaller bore....

Debating rounds recently w/a bud - looking to do a sporter for paper/varmint/deer and maybe hogs.

I was under the impression the XC and 47, as well as 6CM were all VERY Close in capacity. Not one to run redline, or over, but safe max loads w/top accuracy.

It looks like no doubt the rounds give a good gain over the BR. Feeding is important. Know a fella shooting the 6 Dasher as a compromise of feeding, bore life, and speed.

Wonder what the cost of bore life would be going from 6.5 to 6 on say the 47, but I guess you'd have to factor bullet costs to see the real diff in expenses, prob not alot in the long run.

6x47 shooters, any reason over the XC? Just wondering...learning. Any idea how much fps loss per inch - say using a 22" bbl? 105s the way to go, vs. 115s? 1:8 twist?

I built a 6x47 for myself last week. 23.5" Bartlien 1-7.7 . Load development was the easiest Ive ever had. Literally everything I put through it: shot very well. I settled on a seemingly mild load that gets me 2975 with 107s and H4350. I went faster, but it just absolutely hammers there, so I just stopped there. I'm thinking enough of this chambering that I am going to build my comp rifle in 6x47 over 243 like I had planned to do. The comp rig will sport a 27" tube though. Hoping for 115s around 3000.

Im liking the 6x47 over others mainly for the brass. That stuff is simply great. Tough as hell and uniform from the get go. Losing it in comps will suck, but I hate loosing any brass that I put a ton of time in prepping it!

Wet chamber/brass will increase pressure that is pert common knowledge, no need to test it.
Not hard to keep chamber n brass dry, still if your preference is adjust load vs common sense ... press on

Since I typically have to do all my loadwork in the rain away here in the NW, I haven't seen any pressure spikes. Been running this same load in several rifles for the last 4 years. Shoot in the rain every weekend and no problems.

Not sure anyone can keep ammo dry during a match in a big downpour. If you come up with something please let me know.

Its easy to keep ammo dry while shooting at my local range or while im typing on the internet. But at a match I face mother nature and she can change things real quick.

The point being is to not shoot close to pressure on a nice, cool, and dry day. Because when it is wet and hot things will change quickly.

FYI's for those wanting to run 6x47L...

I'm running a 6x47L as my mainstay and have been for 5 years now.

First barrels life was a estimated 2400 rounds with the last 1000 shots being 115's/R17 at 3070 fps.

2cnd barrel lost accuracy at 1500 but I discovered the firing pin stem was broken when I tried to fire the 1st round out of my 3rd barrel. Fatigued stem is probably why the 2cnd barrel seemed shot out. I was wondering why my trigger felt weird for the last hundred rounds, LOL.

At 2100 now with 3rd barrel which is melonited, still hammers, hoping for 3500-4000 barrel life! Running 115DTACS at 2960 fps out of a 26" Schneider 5P which is a medium load.

H-4831 is the perfect powder for 115's in this cartridge. G7 .292 works with come ups. I don't feel the need to switch to 105's because I like that extra thwack on steel. I can't tell any difference in the wind with 115's going 100 fps faster either.

I finally lost a piece of brass due to a loose primer pocket. Probably one of the pieces that I was experimenting with to see when the bolt got sticky ...115's at 3250, 105's at 3340. Talk about some strong frikken brass, it still held a primer!

If I were to change to any other cartridge I'd do 6-6.5x55 AI. 105's at 3400 fps would be pretty cool for 800-1000 rounds when the barrel would already be shot out. I guess I could do a mild load of a measly 3100 to save the barrel some.

I think they plug both ends of the barrel before treating it, as it deposits quite a thick and tough layer.

Depends on the accuracy you want, bullets will keep coming out even after 10K rounds

Mine went at around 1900-2100, it's a barrel burner like the 6.5-284. If you want more barrel life, get the 6.5x47, it goes to 3500-4000, mine both did anyway.

Negative. I have a nitrided barrel and it's done inside and out, it doesn't add any thickness to the material. Not enough to change dimensions in a meaningful way.

Why would one want just the outside nitrided, what purpose would that serve?

The outside you want to do to get it black. Why would you want the inside nitrided? Give up accuracy for a few extra rounds? If it was any good, don't you think BR and F guys would have caught on by now?

BR guys use it all the time. I've got a 6BR and my 3rd group after getting it back from nitriding was a .070'' group. I doubt I lost much accuracy.

Don't know of anyone in F-Class Open here that does that, and never heard of anyone in the BR scene doing it or mentioning it. I know BAT nitrides their Chrome-moly 3-lug actions to prevent corrosion, but that's about it.

Double barrel life is great so the larger bore on the same case is attractive no doubt.

Ran a 7BR rifle for years, seems it never showed any wear

Melonite=Ferritic nitrocarburizing=Tennifer(with some slight variations on the process.)

The advantage is that it surface hardens the barrel and it lasts longer. My barrel is faster than others, but it's a Rock 5R and I've heard they run fast anyway so I couldn't say that it's due to the treatment.


Does the Dutchman mean parkerizing or black oxide coating?
